Spring 2020 Canvas Course Prep Session

On Friday, January 10th there will be a three hour Open Lab in McGraw 19C, spotted with five-minute mini sessions about targeted reminders on a wide range of topics. The LTC and LEARN Center would like to help you work on anything on your start of semester to-do list. Even if the mini session don’t touch on your tasks, there will be people here to help with anything during the Open Lab times.

  • 1:00pm-1:30pm Canvas 24-7 Support vs HelpDesk followed by Open Lab
  • 1:30pm-2:00pm Transferring content from one Canvas course to another followed by Open Lab
  • 2:00pm-2:30pm What goes into a syllabus, and what resources are available? Followed by Open Lab
  • 2:30pm-3:00pm Gradebook setup followed by Open Lab
  • 3:00pm-3:30pm Designing good assignments in Canvas followed by Open Lab
  • 3:30pm-4:00pm LEARN Center offerings for Spring followed by Open Lab

If the above is too much to keep track of during this busy time of year, just stop in during any time that works for you, and we will be here to help you get done the things YOU need to get done.

While walk-ins are encouraged, if you plan on joining us at any point, please consider signing up in advance so we know to expect you.

Emerging Technology Information Session (11/19/2019)

Did you know that the Learning Technology Center (LTC) supports instructors in piloting emerging technologies in their courses? These technologies are selected in order to address teaching and learning challenges. Over the past few years, the LTC has supported instructors in exploring technologies including Webex Teams, Poll Everywhere, and adaptive learning platforms Realizeit and Cerego.

The LTC supports instructors in innovative teaching.

Adaptive Learning Information Session Monday October 28th

The Learning Technology Center (LTC) is currently exploring adaptive learning technologies, focusing on the platform Cerego. If you are potentially interested in incorporating adaptive learning into your course but do not know where or how to get started, consider attending the adaptive learning information session next Monday (10/28/19) so you can learn more about the possibilities offered by adaptive learning.

The Cerego platform offers computer and mobile options.

The information session takes place at 3:30 pm on Monday October 28th, 2019 in McGraw 19A, and runs for about 45 minutes. If you are interested, please sign up here. Please note that you will need to log in with your UW-Whitewater credentials to register for this session.

If you are interested in adaptive learning, you are also invited to attend a meeting discussing adaptive learning on campus this Friday (10/25/19).

Humanizing Your Courses

Presence, Empathy, and Awareness

Inspired by the thinking of Michelle Pacansky-Brock, the “Humanizing Your Courses” series will explore ways to create human-centered learning experiences. This second workshop will feature a panel of some of our most “present” faculty members. We’ll explore examples from their classroom experiences, including face-to-face and online formats. They will provide tips and guidance on how to create a welcoming and human presence in the classroom, sense when students need extra support, and learn how to listen to and understand our students more directly. In addition, they will also discuss the challenges of remaining so highly focused on student needs.

Attendees will discuss:

  • Strategies to be more “present” in the classroom or online.
  • Approaches to displaying empathy and sensing when students need help.
  • Activities to facilitate knowing students better and creating formative feedback loops
  • Tips to be more aware of your OWN needs.
  • Tips for dealing with the challenges and issues associated with increased empathy

Adaptive Learning Information Session for UW-Whitewater at Rock County on October 21st

Adaptive learning platforms offer a way to structure student learning activities and assessments to personalize the learning experience on how a student performs. The adaptive learning platform provides targeted feedback and additional learning material to help foster student learning. Additionally, adaptive learning platforms typically offer instructors analytics to closely monitor student progress and areas that specific students may struggle.

The UW-Whitewater Learning Technology Center is currently seeking instructors interested in piloting adaptive learning during the Spring 2020 semester. The adaptive learning platform currently being piloted is called Cerego. With Cerego, instructors can create content and, based on the students’ correct and incorrect responses, the Cerego platform determines what specific students need to study. 

Learning Technology Center staff will be at the UW-Whitewater at Rock County campus (HS0027) on Monday October 21st, 2019 from 12:00 to 12:50 pm to provide an information session on adaptive learning. If you are interested in learning more about adaptive learning, and the current adaptive learning pilot, please join us at this session!

Fall 2019 “Teaching with Webex Teams Bootcamp”

Searching for ways to build community with students in your online class? Looking for a way to facilitate communication and collaboration between your students in your face-to-face class? You may benefit from the Learning Technology Center’s (LTC) “Teaching with Webex Teams Bootcamp!”

Any instructor interested in using Webex Teams is welcome. The LTC’s Fall 2019 “Teaching with Webex Teams Bootcamp” takes place on a series of Thursday afternoons in October (10/10, 10/17, 10/24) from 3:30 pm to 4:15 pm at the UW-Whitewater campus in McGraw Hall. You do not need to attend all sessions, but the second and third sessions build upon the information provided in the first session. Registrations are encouraged.

Webex Teams

Thursday, October 10, 2019: Why Should I Use Webex Teams?

This first session introduces participants to Cisco Webex Teams and why instructors and students might benefit from incorporating it. Participants will be introduced to the concepts of “Teams” and “Spaces.” Facilitators will provide examples to help participants understand what Webex Teams is (and is not), how Webex Teams works, and the purpose in using Webex Teams.

Thursday, October 17, 2019: How Do I Use Webex Teams?

This second session provides participants with a hands-on technical training with Cisco Webex Teams. Participants will practice creating “Teams” and “Spaces,” as well using Webex Teams to communicate and collaborate with others. We will also touch on the use of the Webex integration in Canvas. Please bring a laptop or mobile device in order to get the most of the hands-on training experience.

Thursday, October 24, 2019: Now What Do I Do With Webex Teams?

This third, and final, session provides participants with a forum to discuss potential applications of Webex Teams in their teaching. Facilitators will provide participants with “best practices” for using Webex Teams based on instructor use at UW-Whitewater.

Please note: The LTC does not provide a stipend for attending the “Teaching with Webex Teams Bootcamp.” However, if you complete all three sessions, you will receive a digital badge. 

Applications Open: Winter 2020 Online/Blended Teaching Institute

The UW-Whitewater Learning Technology Center (LTC) is pleased to announce that applications are now open for the Winter 2020 Online/Blended Teaching Institute.

All faculty and teaching academic staff teaching at UW-Whitewater during the academic year 2019-2020 are eligible to apply for the Winter Institute for Online/Blended Teaching. Applications are due Monday, October 28, 2019. Deans will select participants from their College’s pool of applicants. Participants who successfully complete all of the Institute requirements may earn a $1,000 stipend from their respective college.

The Winter Institute prepares for teaching during the following Summer and Fall terms.

The Online/Blended Teaching Institute is a series of interactive workshops focusing on best practices for teaching online and blended courses. By the conclusion of the institute, participants will develop a course module utilizing best practices for online/blended teaching. This year in December, participants will learn about navigating the online/blended environment, designing engaging content utilizing technology, and creating appropriate digital assessments in two face-to-face workshops. In January, you will have the opportunity to practice these skills by participating in two online webinars. You will create a unit for an online course and discover strategies to facilitate interactive online teaching while managing an online classroom. Participants will be able to complete the January portion of the Winter institute remotely!

During the month of September, the LTC will be offering opportunities to work on and learn about Canvas features. We will continue to offer workshops throughout the fall semester.

We will focus on a single tool, and dive deep into various options and use cases for how that tool works.  The second hour will be available as an Open Lab.

  • Grades: Weighting grades, Late policies, Muting Assignments, SpeedGrader, setting a default grade, and setting up extra credit.
  • Rubrics: This will start by touching briefly on rubric creation, but will focus on techniques to maximize the amount of value you can get by building rubrics directly in Canvas.

Using Poll Everywhere to Engage Students

Are you looking for ways to increase student engagement? You might be interested in using Poll Everywhere. Poll Everywhere allows you to receive immediate feedback from your students, who can respond in real-time to polls that you create. Students can respond to Poll Everywhere polls via their computers or mobile devices, thus offering the potential to transform lectures to an active and engaging experience. This service is offered at no charge to instructors and students; all you need is a UW-Whitewater NetID to get started. 

Curious, but not sure how you’d use Poll Everywhere? Check out some of the great ways you can use Poll Everywhere in the classroom. Or, see how professors use these 10 active learning strategies that connect teachers with students. 

This summer, the Learning Technology Center is offering two sessions to help you use Poll Everywhere in your course. Both sessions have the same content, aiming to introduce you to Poll Everywhere and help you set it up in your classes. Lauren from Poll Everywhere will facilitate the training to get you up and running quickly and easily.
