The hallways might be a bit quieter over the next few weeks, but the learning never ends at the Learning Technology Center! Below you’ll find a few opportunities to help finish strong and keep the momentum going through to the Spring:

Canvas

Once you’ve marked up your students’ final exams and papers, be sure to check the settings of your gradebook to ensure accuracy and to prepare for a successful transfer to WINS. The LTC will offer multiple sessions for instructors to double-and-triple check final grades:

  • Canvas Grading Lab (12/6/2021, 10am) – Check and double-check grade categories and schemes.
  • Canvas Grade Submission (multiple sessions and times) – transfer grades directly from the Canvas Gradebook to WINS.

Winterim 2022

Spend Winterim at the LTC (in-person or online) with dedicated time and support to complete course preparation for Spring 2022 or for Summer/Fall 2022!

LinkedIn Learning

LinkedIn Learning – Instructor Use Cases (12/6/2021, 2pm)
Join us as we explore how instructors on our campus integrate the wealth of learning and development resources on subjects ranging from advanced software training to soft-skills development and enrichment.

Over the break, take some time to develop deeper technical abilities, hone soft skills, or start from the beginning with new software, all within LinkedIn Learning. Check out our blog for more information and get started with your learning pathways!

Canvas Update (11/20/2021)

On Saturday, November 20, Instructure will deploy the latest release to the Canvas environment. The highlights of this release are listed below. The full release notes are also available.

  • Assignments — Submission Feedback Indicator: In the Assignment Details page, the Show Rubric and View Feedback links indicate when new comments have been added as an annotation or in a rubric.
  • Settings — Settings Tab URL Links: The Account and Course Settings tabs support independent URL references. This change allows users to remain in a specific tab after a Settings page is refreshed. 
  • SpeedGrader – Assignment Text Entry Word Count: The word count for assignment text submissions is displayed in SpeedGrader. 

UW-Whitewater Updates

  • Beginning on December 1st, 2021 all video files that are created and uploaded into Kaltura through Canvas will have caption files automatically generated. For additional details, please review our blog post on this topic.

Kaltura Auto-Generated Captions

Beginning on December 1st, 2021 all video files that are created and uploaded into Kaltura through Canvas will have caption files automatically generated. These automatic captions will appear as “English (autocaption)” to indicate that they are machine generated and are on average 90% accurate. The automatically generated captions can be edited using the following process: Reviewing / Editing Kaltura Machine Captions.

What about Kaltura videos created before December 1st, 2021?

Auto captions will only be available for videos created on or after December 1st. Machine captions can be requested for older videos: Requesting Kaltura Machine Captions.

What are Kaltura auto generated captions?

Kaltura uses automatic speech recognition (ASR) technology to automatically generated captions. ASR instantly recognized the word spoken and provides machine-based captions. Captioning is the process that converts the audio content of a video into text captions. Videos are captioned to make the content more accessible and available for users who are deaf and hard of hearing.

Are auto captions adequate for video accommodation requests in the classroom?

Auto captioning does not meet the standard for providing a reasonable accommodation, nor does it provide the level of accuracy required for public facing videos. See Captioning for Accessibility for additional information.

LAST CALL: Winterim 2022 Online Blended Institute Application

The UW-Whitewater Learning Technology Center (LTC) is pleased to announce that applications are now open for a Winterim 2022 Online Blended Institute in a shortened hybrid format. The overall goal of the institute is to align quality course design with best practices in blended teaching, preparing faculty for online course development, and blended teaching in future academic terms. The course models a blended course including readings, materials, and short homework assignments. Participants will be required to build a fully online unit of a course they could teach.

This institute is intended for people designing a course for Summer or Fall 2022 or for those teaching in Spring 2022. It would also be appropriate for instructors designing a new course.

If you are interested in course prep for Spring 2022, try our new course prep boot camp.

There are six required synchronous workshops M/W/F scheduled from 1:00 pm to 2:30pm in Webex from January 3 through January 14. These will include a student panel discussion and a peer to peer review session to share ideas and collaborate on online course designs in progress. Final course materials will be due January 28th.

We will be accepting 20 applicants into the Institute this winter. Preference will be given to those faculty and full-time instructional academic staff who fully complete the application in a first come, first serve basis and who have not previously completed the Online Blended Institute since the summer of 2018. Applicants will be emailed regarding their acceptance on Wednesday, December 8.

The application takes approximately 10 minutes to complete. We recommend completing the application on a computer, as some questions involve typed responses.

Winter Course Prep Bootcamp

Strapped for time, and looking for a guiding hand on all the things you need to do to get a Canvas course up and running for Spring?  Now is your chance!  Join us for hands-on workshops broken up between quick demonstrations, and supported work time.

These sessions are designed for instructors looking to get their Spring 2022 course up and running, but all faculty and staff are welcome. If you are interested in designing a course for Summer or Fall 2022, try the Winter Online Blended Institute. Come with previous content ready to be updated, or moved from paper into Canvas (ie moving a quiz or rubric into a digital form). This series of workshops will provide you the how-to and time to complete specific tasks to get your course set up. Enroll in one, a handful, or all of them; even if it is just for a way to schedule your time.

This session explores how faculty use multimedia in creative ways, from intro videos to weekly video “to-do” lists, to short podcasts.  We will also explore how to incorporate multimedia into student assignments, video presentations, and discussion boards.

“Next-Level” Multimedia – Rethinking the “Blended Lecture”

Friday, November 5: 1:00-2:30 PM
This session explores how to rethink the “Blended Lecture”.  What are the best practices for multimodal video capture?  How long should videos be?  What shouldn’t be captured?  How can I interleave lecture content with other blended materials? How else can I connect content and assessment?

“Next-Level” Design in Canvas – Modular Design and Gating

Monday, November 15 : 1:30 PM-3:00PM
This session explores how faculty use gating and timed releases, prerequisites in Canvas, and use cases when – and when not — to use these techniques.

“Next-Level” Multimedia – Rethinking the “Discussion Board”

Friday, November 19: 1:00-2:30 PM
This session explores rethinking the “Discussion Board”:  Examples of how to use video discussions; when to use Canvas compared to when to use other discussion tools like Webex; equity and privacy concerns; and faculty use cases of discussion boards.

Canvas Update (10/16/2021)

On Saturday, October 16, Instructure will deploy the latest release to the Canvas environment. The highlights of this release are listed below. The full release notes are also available.

  • Navigation – Sticky Navigation Menus: The Account, Course, and User Navigation Menus remain sticky and are always visible on their respective pages.
  • SpeedGrader – Submission Status Label Edits: The SpeedGrader sidebar includes an Edit icon to be used for submission statuses. Statuses can be edited the same way as in the Gradebook. Additionally, adjusting a status in SpeedGrader also applies to the Gradebook.
  • Gradebook – Assignment Search: The Gradebook includes two search fields: one for student names, and one for assignment names. Using the Assignment search field displays any search results that match an assignment in the course.
  • Notifications – Course Notification Customization: Course notification preferences can be customized in a user’s Notifications page.
  • User Settings – Microsoft Immersive Reader: The Microsoft Immersive Reader button can be enabled in User Settings, if not already enabled by the institution. Additionally, the Reader is supported in Assignments, and the Syllabus.

Check your Links – Documentation Update Reminder

Earlier this year, the Learning Technology Center (LTC) relocated all existing documentation from our old site (spaces.uww.edu) to the new location within the ServiceNow Knowledge Base. Redirects that were put in place on spaces.uww.edu will be removed on December 1st, 2021. Please check to make sure your links are updated!

How can I easily check the links within my Canvas Course?

The Canvas Course Link Validator is a great way to verify links in your course! In most cases, it will be able to detect links that may still exist within your course that reference pages on the old documentation site.

Are the links already disabled – they are not loading?

Currently, links to spaces.uww.edu are only available when you are on campus or connected to the Remote Access VPN. This was a necessary change for due to security concerns.
