Canvas – Start Your Transition Today!

Over the last few months, teams across the UW-System have been working on getting the new Learning Management System ready for access.  We are happy to announce that all instructors now have access to the Canvas platform!  Instructors have access to start trying things out, migrating their course materials and mocking up content.  Here are a few important things to keep in mind:

  • Setup and Configuration Ongoing.  We are still working on configuring and testing integrations such as TurnItIn, Respondus Lockdown Browser, Redshelf, textbook publisher integrations, and more. These will be made available as they are tested and implemented by UW-System.
  • User roles are not yet determined.  There is a team at UW-System that is working on finalizing the roles (Student, Graduate Assistant, Grader, Reviewers, Guest Lecturers, etc) that will be available to our campus.  As soon as we receive that information, we will pass it along.
  • Course Complexity Analysis.  UW-Whitewater and UW-Superior were part of a team to develop a tool to help you analyze your existing Desire2Learn course. The goal of the tool is to provide some estimates on what areas of your existing course will require the most focus and time for migration.  This tool is available at http://dl.uwsa.edu
  • We have 24/7/365 Email, Phone and Chat support included with the new Canvas platform.  This is available today!  As you are testing things out, please reach out via those channels as a first line of defense. Questions that they cannot answer will be escalated to the Canvas Support Team here at UW-Whitewater.
  • Blank Courses for Migration.  All users who have taught in the last year have been setup with 3 blank courses in Canvas. These courses are there for testing, or starting to migrate and setup your actual courses. Just like in Desire2Learn, these courses would be copied into the actual timetable course once those are available. If you need more test courses, please reach out to Canvas Support.

The official login page and support channels for Canvas are located at http://uww.edu/canvas.

What’s next?
We are currently in the process of meeting with each college to discuss the overall migration and training plans.  Once those plans are set, they will be published on the Canvas Transition Website. In the meantime, you can start reviewing the FAQs and training resources on the website.   Access the Canvas Transition Website here: http://go.uww.edu/canvas-transition

When can I start using Canvas for my courses?
The first opportunity for courses in the Canvas platform will be the Fall 2018 semester.  We are targeting to have all course migrations completed before Summer 2019.

If you have any questions or concerns about the transition, please reach out to the UW-W Learning Technology Center.

What is Canvas?

The UW-System Board of Regents has signed a contract with Instructure for their Canvas product.  Canvas will be replacing Desire2Learn as our next Learning Management System.  The earliest opportunity to migrate courses to Canvas is expected to be Fall 2018.  For more information about the overall project, go to http://go.uww.edu/canvas-transition

Canvas Course Design Feedback – Version 2

As part of the Canvas transition, there has been a UW-System team working on developing different course template options.  The team recently surveyed faculty, staff and students from all UW-System campuses for their feedback on Version 1 of the Canvas course template. This feedback informed the development of Version 2 of the Canvas course template. They would like your input on Version 2.

Step 1: Watch the 8 minute video below.  It provides background on the project and a demonstration of the Canvas environment and template.  There is also a handout for the version 2 template available at: http://bit.ly/uwtemplatev2guide

Step 2: Test out Version 2 of the template.  Use the following login information to try it out.  Note: this is a “Student” role account.

Login with your Net-ID to get the access credentials

Step 3: Complete the survey by Friday, January 5th, 2018.  The survey link is available inside of the Canvas course accessed above.  Please allow for 10 – 20 minutes to complete the survey.

Instructure Canvas contract signed by UW-System Board of Regents

PrintUW-Whitewater has received word that the UW System Board of Regents has signed the contract with Instructure for their Canvas product.

Now that the contract is signed, here is what you need to know:

  • The Director of Learning Technology is serving as the UW-Whitewater Institution Project Manager.  Please continue to use the Learning Technology Center (ltc@uww.edu) as your primary contact for questions and concerns.  Each UW-System Institution has a dedicated project team and will be working together on migration efforts.  Provost Elrod and Assistant Vice Chancellor Pokot (ICIT) are the UW-Whitewater project sponsors.
  • The earliest opportunity to migrate courses to Canvas is expected to be Fall 2018 with all courses migrated before December 2019.  The move from D2L to Canvas is an exciting change, but will not happen overnight.  These estimates are not set in stone, and they may change as things progress.
  • Please do not contact UW-Madison colleagues or Canvas to gain access to a test course. Though we can understand that you might be excited to get started working in Canvas right away, please do not contact our colleagues at UW-Madison in an effort to gain access to their Canvas environment or use the free public version of Canvas to get started. Both of these environments may be quite different than the environment the UW System will be creating with Canvas and will not be included in migration planning.
  • Any inquiries from the media regarding the Instructure Canvas contract should be directed to: https://www.wisconsin.edu/dle/

We will continue to receive more information in the weeks and months ahead, and will do our best to communicate this information with the UW-Whitewater campus community as transparently as possible throughout this transition process. As we understand that there will be a lot of questions during this transition period, the Learning Technology Center has created a website to help keep the UW-Whitewater campus community informed, which can be accessed at this link: http://go.uww.edu/canvas-migration

We understand that whenever a large-scale change like this occurs, there will be a number of questions and concerns that arise. The Learning Technology Center aims to be as transparent as possible during this transition period, and will undertake concerted efforts to keep the UW-Whitewater campus community as informed as possible throughout the change. Please continue to contact the Learning Technology Center (ltc@uww.edu) for questions and concerns related to this transition.
