Planned Server Maintenance Outage (6/14)

Learn@UW has scheduled server maintenance for the UW System on Saturday, June 14th from 6:00 AM to 10:00 AM (CT). During this timeframe, the Desire2Learn service will not be available, and outage pages will be posted to inform users who may attempt to access D2L.

The outage is expected to end during the scheduled end time, but we will update this news item in the event that the necessary maintenance takes longer than scheduled.

Scheduled Service Maintenance (3/20)

On Thursday, March 20th, from midnight to 5:00 AM, there will be rolling outages to various UW-Whitewater IT services. These may include email, WINS, TouchNet, etc. All services should be up and running by 5:00 AM.

In addition, Learn@UW will be performing maintenance on March 20th during the weekly scheduled Thursday morning maintenance window (5:00 AM – 7:00 AM CT). During this window, D2L will NOT be available, so please plan your coursework accordingly.

[RESOLVED] Maintenance Window Extension and Outage

The regularly scheduled, weekly maintenance window was extended beyond the regular 7:00 AM end time, and service was restored at 7:33 AM this morning. Users may have experienced slowness or may have been unable to login during the maintenance window and during this extension.

Then, starting at approximately 8:00 AM this morning, additional reports came in that users were experiencing “Service Unavailable” errors when trying to access D2L. Learn@UW investigated and fixed the cause, and the outage ended at approximately 8:24 AM. Users should no longer be seeing errors and should be able to log into D2L.

D2L Version 10.1 Known Issues

Known IssuesWelcome back to the Spring 2014 semester!  As many of you are aware, Learn@UW recently deployed the 10.1 update to our Desire2Learn environment.  There are a number of issues that have been reported and that we are working to get resolved with D2L.  Below, we just wanted to touch on a few of the major issues that we have been seeing:

Inline Document Viewer
There were two major issues reported with the new inline document viewer:

  1. Files not previously rendered for display by the 10.1 Document Viewer could load very slowly until rendering completed.
  2. Some documents load quickly but display an error icon.

At this time, configuration changes have been made by Desire2Learn which appear to address these issues.

Popup Windows will not load in Chrome
In Chrome 32.0.1700.76 and earlier, some popup windows will not load correct (Insert Stuff, File Uploads, etc).  This issue is reported to be fixed in Chrome 32.0.1700.77.  This issue does not impact alternate browsers.

Content Editor Causes Internet Explorer 9 (IE9) to Crash
When you are working with content in IE9, using various tools from the “NEW” HTML editor cause the browser to crash.  This issue has been reported to D2L and the current workaround is to enable compatibility mode in IE9 or use an alternate browser.

Quicklinks as Content Topics to Course Files No Longer Supported
In previous versions of D2L, a Quicklink Content item could be made to link to an internal course file. This option is no longer available in D2L, and any Content items made this way previously will not be accessible for download within Content. You can tell if your Content item was made as a Quicklink by looking at the source underneath that item’s title.  The workaround is to delete Quicklink Content item and create a new content item using “New” and selecting “Add From Manage Files”.

System.IO.PathTooLongException Error when Copying Courses
In recent versions of D2L they have imposed a file character limited with copying course content forward to new courses.  The System.IO.PathTooLongException error will be triggered if you have a file or directory name that is too long.  If you do get this error when copying content, the only workaround we currently have is to rename files/directories that have long names.  We are hoping there is a better solution for this in the future.

Server Maintenance Outage (1/18)

Learn@UW will be performing monthly server maintenance on January 18th between 5:00 AM and 7:00 AM (CT). During this window, users may experience slowness or errors and may be unable to login. It’s recommended that users do not complete any coursework-related activities, including Quiz or Dropbox submissions, during this outage to avoid losing any work.

REMINDER: Desire2Learn Upgrade 1/8 – 1/9

This is a reminder that Desire2Learn is scheduled for an upgrade to version 10.1. The upgrade outage will start on Wednesday, January 8th, 2014 at 9:30 PM (CT) and end on Thursday, January 9th, 2014 at 10:30 AM (CT). During this timeframe, D2L will not be available. Please plan your course work accordingly.

D2L Service Interruption Tomorrow Morning (12/18)

Learn@UW has reported an issue with users submitting ePortfolio items to Dropboxes, and in order to fix this issue, a short outage has been scheduled for tomorrow morning, Wednesday, Decemeber 18th, from 5:00 AM to 5:30 AM.

During this period, access to D2L will be intermittent. Users may experience interruption of service or see “TermNotFound” errors while working in D2L. If you have any questions or concerns, please contact UW-W D2L Support.

UW-W Campus Network Outage (12/7)

UW-Whitewater LogoOn Saturday, December 7th, UW-Whitewater’s Internet service provider will be performing maintenance to the cable that provides Internet service to campus. Work will begin at midnight and could last up to 4:00 a.m.

During this time, on-campus users will not be able to access any Internet services through the UW-Whitewater network (e.g., D2L, Facebook, Google, etc.). Off-campus users will not be able to access any campus hosted services (e.g., UW-Whitewater website, email, WINS, network storage).

Users Receiving Old D2L Notifications

Some users may have received several email notifications from D2L that were related to past courses. Learn@UW has inadvertently triggered notification emails this afternoon (October 1st, 2013) starting at around 3:00 PM for UW-Whitewater users.

The emails can be ignored and shouldn’t affect your courses. However, we apologize that some of you may be receiving many of these emails, especially if you had notification subscriptions set up in your past courses.

Planned Network Outage 6/22

On Saturday, June 22, from 6:00 – 6:30 a.m. there will be a brief network outage while necessary maintenance is performed by WiscNet, the campus Internet provider.

During this time, off-campus users will be unable access campus services connected to the network, including email, UW-Whitewater websites, WINS, etc. Users on campus will be able to access campus services (email, WINS, etc.), but will not have access to an external Internet connection.

Planned system outages are announced via email, and at uww.edu/icit in the blog and the System Status bars. If you have questions, please contact the Technology Support Center (TSC) Helpdesk at 262-472-HELP (4357), or helpdesk@uww.edu.
