LAST CALL: Winterim 2022 Online Blended Institute Application

The UW-Whitewater Learning Technology Center (LTC) is pleased to announce that applications are now open for a Winterim 2022 Online Blended Institute in a shortened hybrid format. The overall goal of the institute is to align quality course design with best practices in blended teaching, preparing faculty for online course development, and blended teaching in future academic terms. The course models a blended course including readings, materials, and short homework assignments. Participants will be required to build a fully online unit of a course they could teach.

This institute is intended for people designing a course for Summer or Fall 2022 or for those teaching in Spring 2022. It would also be appropriate for instructors designing a new course.

If you are interested in course prep for Spring 2022, try our new course prep boot camp.

There are six required synchronous workshops M/W/F scheduled from 1:00 pm to 2:30pm in Webex from January 3 through January 14. These will include a student panel discussion and a peer to peer review session to share ideas and collaborate on online course designs in progress. Final course materials will be due January 28th.

We will be accepting 20 applicants into the Institute this winter. Preference will be given to those faculty and full-time instructional academic staff who fully complete the application in a first come, first serve basis and who have not previously completed the Online Blended Institute since the summer of 2018. Applicants will be emailed regarding their acceptance on Wednesday, December 8.

The application takes approximately 10 minutes to complete. We recommend completing the application on a computer, as some questions involve typed responses.

This session explores how faculty use multimedia in creative ways, from intro videos to weekly video “to-do” lists, to short podcasts.  We will also explore how to incorporate multimedia into student assignments, video presentations, and discussion boards.

“Next-Level” Multimedia – Rethinking the “Blended Lecture”

Friday, November 5: 1:00-2:30 PM
This session explores how to rethink the “Blended Lecture”.  What are the best practices for multimodal video capture?  How long should videos be?  What shouldn’t be captured?  How can I interleave lecture content with other blended materials? How else can I connect content and assessment?

“Next-Level” Design in Canvas – Modular Design and Gating

Monday, November 15 : 1:30 PM-3:00PM
This session explores how faculty use gating and timed releases, prerequisites in Canvas, and use cases when – and when not — to use these techniques.

“Next-Level” Multimedia – Rethinking the “Discussion Board”

Friday, November 19: 1:00-2:30 PM
This session explores rethinking the “Discussion Board”:  Examples of how to use video discussions; when to use Canvas compared to when to use other discussion tools like Webex; equity and privacy concerns; and faculty use cases of discussion boards.

Keynote speakers include Bryan Alexander, author of “Academia Next: The Futures of Higher Education,” and Kathe Pelletier, Director of Teaching and Learning with EDUCAUSE. They, along with instructors and staff throughout UW-System, will reflect upon ideas and innovations, lessons learned, the technologies utilized, and the experiments tried over the last year that may shape future educational opportunities.

Summer Online Blended Teaching Institute application

Applications are open for the Summer 2021 Online Blended Institute. The overall goal of the institute is to align quality course design with best practices in online teaching, preparing faculty for online, remote, hybrid or blended course development, and teaching in future academic terms.

This Summer Institute is designed in a hybrid modality combining a series of short online workshops and asynchronous materials in Canvas. The course models hybrid and remote modalities including readings, materials, and short homework assignments. Participants will be required to build a fully online unit of a course they could teach.

The Call for the Summer Online Blended Teaching Institute is open.

There are four synchronous workshops scheduled from 10:00 am to noon starting Wednesday July 7th.

Wednesday, July 21, 2021: 10:00am – Noon
Wednesday, July 28, 2021: 10:00am – Noon

Submission of final Institute content Monday, August 9th, 2021.These will include a student panel discussion and a peer to peer review session to share ideas and collaborate on online course designs in progress. Additional faculty guests will share their existing online course designs.

Call for proposals: 2021 LTDC Virtual Showcase

Instructors and staff are invited to participate in the 2021 LTDC Virtual Showcase: Transforming the Future of Education to be held Tuesday, June 15 and Wednesday, June 16, 2021. We are accepting two types of proposals: pre-recorded, asynchronous “TechTalk” videos and more traditional conference-style presentations. Proposal submission deadline: Friday, April 16, 2021

Transforming the Future of Education

TechTalks: Technology administrators, instructional designers, and instructors are invited to create brief (5-15 minutes) pre-recorded videos explaining how to use a tool or certain applications of the tool. The focus of the TechTalk should be training or demonstration.

Traditional conference presentations: Sessions will be 30 minutes and will consist of 20 minutes of presentation and 10 minutes of Q&A. Presentation materials and proceedings are welcomed and will be shared on the LTDC Virtual showcase website.

This year’s LTDC Virtual Showcase will include three tracks. Proposals from instructional designers, instructional technologists, faculty and instructors are invited around the following tracks:

  • Student Experience and Success: This track explores ways in which the student experience has changed within the new learning modalities due to the addition of equity, diversity and inclusion (EDI) practices, Universal Design for Learning (UDL) practices and accessibility practices. How has shifting from face-to-face instruction to multiple modalities impacted the student experience or their success?
  • Online Instructional Pedagogy: This track explores how online education has impacted course design and layout, synchronous/asynchronous techniques for engagement and motivation, group work, activity or assessment creation, or other learning designs and lessons learned. What instructional challenges have you overcome as you have learned about online instruction? What are some key takeaways or lessons learned over the past year that you would like to continue to develop?
  • Leveraging Learning Technology: This track explores the use of various tools, technologies and teaching strategies used to enhance student learning, create efficiencies, or promote engagement. How have you used certain technology or tools to enhance your teaching and the student experience? What tools have intentionally made the online student experience more equitable, efficient or engaging?

Proposals may be submitted for presentations or TechTalks. If you are interested in presenting on multiple topics, please fill out the online submission form for each topic. Proposals will be reviewed by the LTDC Virtual Showcase Planning Committee, and all participants will be notified of participation within the showcase on Monday, May 3, 2021.

Call for Participants: Canvas Skill Mastery Certification Opportunity

The UWSA Office of Learning and Information Technology (OLIT) is pleased to issue this call for participants for the new Canvas skill mastery certification program offered by Instructure.

This professional development program for educators includes a series of six courses designed to strengthen knowledge and use of Canvas through hands-on experiences that lead to certification of their skill in using the Canvas platform. Courses are entirely run by Instructure’s Canvas Learning Services team, not by UW System Administration. Each of the courses takes approximately six weeks to complete. The estimated time commitment to complete a course and a reflection activity is 16 – 22 hours per course. One UW System cohort of 37 participants will launch Monday, March 29, 2021. More details about these courses are located in the Call for Participants – Canvas Certified Educator Program (Higher Education Track).

To qualify for the program, applicants must:

  • have reviewed this Call for Participants and understand the program expectations
  • have a full-time faculty or teaching academic staff appointment at a UW System institution (except UW-Madison) during the Spring 2021 semester
  • already have a working knowledge of using Canvas
  • demonstrate a keen interest in taking full advantage of Canvas in teaching your courses

The application process is very simple and requires applicants to submit a completed survey available at https://uwsystemadmin.qualtrics.com/jfe/form/SV_3IwuM04nwiiUy7r by Friday, March 5, 2021. Scholarship awards will be announced by Friday, March 12, 2021. We urge applicants to carefully consider their ability to accommodate the time commitment.

Online Teaching Institute Spring 2021 Applications Open

The Call for the Spring 2021 Online Teaching Institute is now open.

The UW-Whitewater Learning Technology Center (LTC) is pleased to announce that applications are now open for a Spring 2021 Online Teaching Institute. The overall goal of the institute is to align quality course design with best practices in online teaching, preparing faculty for online course development, and online/hybrid teaching in future academic terms.

This Spring Institute is designed to be fully asynchronous and completed over a ten week, work at your own pace, timeline. The course models a fully online course including readings, materials, and short homework assignments. Participants will be required to build a fully online unit of a course they could teach. There will be several optional synchronous workshops, including an orientation, student panel, and peer review session.

We will be accepting up to 25 applicants. Preference will be given to those faculty and full-time instructional academic staff in a first come, first serve basis. To ensure we can serve the entire UW-Whitewater community, we will also prioritize individuals who have not previously completed the Online / Blended teaching Institute since the summer of 2018.  Approved applicants will be emailed regarding their acceptance on Thursday, February 4th, 2021 and be enrolled in the Canvas course site.  Rolling applications will be accepted until March 1st . The Canvas course will open for participants on Monday, February 8th and final submission of work will be due April 16, 2021. 

The application takes approximately 10 minutes to complete. We recommend completing the application on a computer, as some questions involve typed responses.

The Call for the Fall 2020 asynchronous Online Teaching Institute is now open.


The UW-Whitewater Learning Technology Center (LTC) is pleased to announce that applications are now open for a Fall 2020 Institute for Online Teaching which will pilot fully asynchronous delivery of the institute. The overall goal of the institute is to align quality course design with best practices in online teaching, preparing faculty for online course development, and teaching in future academic terms.

This Fall Institute is designed to be fully asynchronous and completed over a ten week period. The course models a fully online course including readings, materials, and short homework assignments. Participants will be required to build a fully online unit of a course they could teach.

We will be accepting 25 applicants into the Institute for Online Teaching this fall. Preference will be given to those faculty and full-time instructional academic staff who fully complete the application in a first come, first serve basis and who have not previously completed the Online / Blended teaching Institute since the summer of 2018. Once we accept 25 applicants, we will close the application. Applicants will be emailed regarding their acceptance on Friday, September 18, 2020 and be enrolled in the Canvas course site. Those who complete the Institute will be eligible for a $500 stipend through the UW System Online Learning Initiative.
