[RESOLVED] Kaltura “My Media” Unavailable for Some Users

RESOLVED June 14th.  All issues reported related to Kaltura have been resolved at this time.  If you continue to have any issues please contact UW-W Desire2Learn Support.

Update – June 12th:  The initial issue has now been resolved and the work around is no longer needed.  Users should again be able to access the “My Media” area.  We have discovered that the initial load time of the My Media tool may take longer than expected – up to 180 seconds.  Kaltura is investigating this issue and we will provide an update as soon as it is received.

Kaltura “My Media” may be unavailable to some users.  Kaltura is working on a hotfix to correct the issue, and it is scheduled to be deployed early next week.

We do have a workaround that instructors can setup in their courses.

  1. Instructors will need to add a widget to their course home page.  There is a widget called “My Media” listed under the “System Widgets” which needs to be added to the course home page.  Instructions on how to add a widget to your homepage is located at: Adding/Removing Widgets on Homepages
  2. Once the widget is added, students and instructors in a course will need to visit the widget, and click on the “Continue” button to authorize their account.
  3. Once the authorization is complete, users can continue using the “My Media” link inside of the “Insert Stuff” tool to access their videos.

We apologize for any inconvenience that this issue has caused, and will let you know once the hotfix has been implemented.

Canvas Workshops – July 2018

The LTC will be offering both Canvas Hands-On Introduction and Canvas Construction Zone sessions during the month of July.  We are planning to offer additional sessions in August and during the Fall 2018 semester.

Canvas Hands-On Introduction (2 Hours) – July 2018
We will cover the basic function of the core tools in the Canvas platform. There will be time to ask questions along the way. If this is your first time touching Canvas, this workshop is the one for you!

Getting Started with TurningPoint v8 – June 7th

Join us on Thursday, June 7th from 1pm to 2pm as we go over the differences between TurningPoint Cloud and TurningPoint 8.  There are some new integration and syncing abilities that will simplify your workflow within Canvas.  TurningPoint 8 will be available in the Fall 2018 semester.

Teaching with Spark (soon to be WebEx Teams) Bootcamp: June 4th, June 11th, June 18th

Searching for ways to build community with students in your online class? Looking for a way to facilitate communication and collaboration between your students in your face-to-face class? You may benefit from using Cisco WebEx Teams, and the Learning Technology Center’s (LTC) “Teaching with WebEx Teams Bootcamp!”

The bootcamp will take place in McGraw 19A on a series of Monday afternoons in June (6/4, 6/11, 6/18) from 1:00 pm to 1:45 pm. The bootcamp will offer demonstrations, hands-on practice, and discussion of applications in WebEx Teams. Even though there is no expectation for outside work between sessions, for the sake of time, the second and third sessions will build on the prior session(s).

All faculty and instructional staff are welcome to attend the “Teaching with WebEx Teams Bootcamp.” Registration is recommended, but walk-ins are also welcome. UW-Whitewater has a campus license, so, even if you’ve never logged into WebEx Teams before, you will not need anything beyond a computer and/or mobile device for this bootcamp.

Please note: This is the same bootcamp as the Spring’s “Teaching with Spark Bootcamp.” There is no stipend associated with attending the “Teaching with WebEx Teams Bootcamp.” However, if you complete all three sessions, you will receive a badge.

Participants will be introduced to the concepts of “Teams” and “Spaces.” Facilitators will provide examples to help participants understand what WebEx Teams is (and is not), how WebEx Teams works, and the purpose in using WebEx Teams.

June 11th, 2018: How Do I Use WebEx Teams?

Instructor Support Survey iPad Winner

Thank you to all the instructors who participated in completing the the Learning Technology Center’s (LTC) Instructor Support Survey! We had over 100 instructors participate and will be using the results to ensure that the LTC is meeting instructors needs in regards to our services, support, and programming.

We held the iPad drawing and our lucky winner is Dennis Elverman from the the College of Business and Economics.

Congratulations to our winner and another thank you to everyone who provided feedback!

Canvas Workshops – May & June 2018

The LTC will be offering a full day of rotating workshops on Wednesday, May 23rd, 2018. We also have a series of Hands-On Introduction and Canvas Construction Zone sessions scheduled for June. We will continue to offer workshops throughout the summer.

Canvas Hands-On Introduction (2 Hours) – Wednesday, May 23rd
We will cover the basic function of the core tools in the Canvas platform. There will be time to ask questions throughout the session. We will offer repeats of this workshop all day – so feel free to attend multiple sessions – or drop in at any time. Please register for any sessions that you may attend to help give us an idea for planning. Registration is not required and you are welcome to drop in the day of the event. Remote viewing options will also be available. Light refreshments will be available.

The final session in this series of three (Now What Do I Do With Spark?) takes place Tuesday, April 24th at 3:30 pm.

This third and final session provides participants with a forum to discuss potential applications of Spark in their teaching. Facilitators will provide participants with “best practices” for using Spark based on recent pilots of Spark conducted with UW-Whitewater instructors.

Interested in Adaptive Learning?

The UW-Whitewater Learning Technology Center (LTC) is currently looking for instructors to take part in the Fall 2018 emerging technology exploration project on adaptive learning. Please see the call for participants for full details on this opportunity. A brief summary is below.

What is the project?
Adaptive learning platforms employ an online, mastery-based learning system that is individualized to each student. Instructors in this project will utilize the adaptive learning platform Cerego, which is designed to comprise roughly between 7 and 10% of the learning activities/assessments in a course. If all required project components are completed, participating instructors can expect to receive a stipend of $1000.

What do I have to do?
Instructors have flexibility in determining the course in which to implement the adaptive learning platform. For more information on participant expectations, please view the original call for participants.

Teaching with Spark Bootcamp Begins This Week!

If you are looking for a tool to facilitate communication and collaboration between your students, you might be interested in the Learning Technology Center’s (LTC) first ever “Teaching with Spark Bootcamp!”

The bootcamp will take place in McGraw 19A on a series of Tuesday afternoons this April (4/10, 4/17, 4/24) from 3:30 pm to 4:20 pm. Please see the video below for a reflection from a UW-Whitewater instructor who used Spark in the Fall of 2018.

UW-Whitewater now has a campus license for Spark, so, feel free to bring your computer or mobile device to the bootcamp sessions and log into Spark (be sure to bring your device if you attend the “hands-on” session on April 17th)! If you would like to download Spark prior to attending, please see our documentation on how to install Spark on a desktop device, and on a mobile device.
