Preset. Since this was a new play by a local author, this rehearsal was taped, and there are cameras everywhere. . .

The opening. Eva the Beaver notices the audience.

Joey the Duck hatches, but can’t get out of his shell.

Nate the Dragon flies to Dragon Island but is intercepted by one of the emperor’s wasps.

Come Back

Posted in General Production, Production Photo, Scenic Design, Scenic Painting on October 6th, 2014 by Eric Appleton

I haven’t posted progress photos lately, as I’ve been focusing on making progress on the set for the UW-Whitewater’s production of “Come Back.” We had our final dress rehearsal last night, so here are a few photos to take us through the past several days.

Here’s the top of the ramp on the scene shop floor. I’ve just finished painting it. Meanwhile, in the background, TD Steve Chene talks to students about the rolling desk unit they’re working on.

In the Barnett theatre, the large flats are laid out for painting. Here a couple of the Intro to Theatre students paint the cerulean flats while I start working on clouds.

Clouds. And More clouds.

The installation of the tree flats commences. The wheelchair off to the side is a piece from the show, and is on stage to ensure that there’s enough space between the flats to get it on and off. You can also see work on the ramp happening.

More progress on the tree flats. I think that’s Allison back there holding it in place while it’s tacked into place.

The finished set, under worklights.

Preset. The lighting was designed by student Jayson Winslow.

Scene from final dress rehearsal. Sky (played by Colton Larson) sits in his friend’s Erin’s wheelchair and mourns his death.

Come Back

The deck started getting assembled today. Here is TA Thad working with one of the Intro to Theatre students on tacking the knee walls to the floor.

In the shop, the tree cutting never ends. Quinn, another TA, cuts out tree shapes.

Enough trees have now had muslin applied that they are ready to be primed, so here’s one of the new work study student, Yoshi and Katie laying on the white paint.

The bird feeders arrived yesterday. . .

. . . so one of my small projects today was to experiment with wiring them up.

The Winter’s Tale

Posted in Lighting Design, Production Photo on June 13th, 2014 by Eric Appleton

Preview night for The Optimist Theatre’s production of “The Winter’s Tale:”

Part of the Milwaukee skyline at sunset as we begin.

The end of the introductory dance, with Hermione and Leontes downstage center.

Leontes begins to explain his suspicions to Antigonus.

Paulina begs Leontes to accept the baby as his daughter.

After distaster, Leontes begins to accept the magnitude of his delusion.

Antigonus about to leave the baby on the shores of Bohemia.

Perdita and Florizel get ready for the sheep shearing.

Dion, Paulina, and Leontes, reflecting over the events of the past fifteen years.

In Paulina’s hall, marveling at the statue of Hermione.

Tomorrow, opening night, will be Friday the 13th. With a full moon.

It was also nice to note that a UW-Whitewater graduate, Lexie Higgins, was working as assistant stage manager on this production.

Some pictures from last night’s dress rehearsal. Once again, the temperature got down to an unseasonable 56 degrees. . .

. . . so as the night went on, all of us at the tech table donned hoodies and blankets. Here’s stage manager Claire and board operator Ashley against the skyline of Milwaukee at dusk.

In Sicilia, at the court of Leontes. Hermione convinces Polixenes to extend his visit. Our director, ML, was very pleased to discover that even though the show begins in daylight, lighting still brought a degree of dimensionality and interest to the stage. The stage floor will be painted tomorrow.

The trial of Hermione.

The top of the second act, as Time tells us we’ve jumped fifteen years forward.

The return to Sicilia, as Leontes and Paulina take about the dear deeparted Hermione.

Anything to Declare?

Posted in General Production, Production Photo, Scenic Design, Scenic Painting on December 3rd, 2013 by Eric Appleton

“Anything to Declare?” opens this morning with our student matinee. Below are two photos from last night’s final dress.

IMG_2850

A moment from the series of revelations late in Act Three (Act One takes place in the same locale — the Dupont’s parlor).

IMG_2828

And a moment from Act Two, Zeze’s garret, when her maid comes to inform her that she has a vistor in the midst entertaining another vistor. . .

I must admit to be being happier with how the second act turned out. The wireframe elements that were supposed to top the walls for Act 1/3 didn’t work — the wire used was too soft and bendy and it was impossible to get the clean sweeps and swirls I’d hoped for. Oh well.
