Tell us a little bit about your unit
Hi my name is Olivia Price, I use She/Her pronouns and I am currently a first year working as a Graphic Designer in the UC Graphics and Marketing department, which is truly a lovely and invigorating place to work. The people are dedicated to creating a warm and inviting atmosphere with a lot of liveliness that I get to look forward to every time I go to the office. Everyday I feel so lucky to work in a place where I can be open and honest about my creative ideas and support me in my journey of learning and growth.
What does an average day look like working for the UC? What does your position entail?
As a graphic designer, an average day working at the UC will begin with greeting coworkers and checking up on emails and my to-do list to make sure I am up to date and on schedule with my projects. Most likely I will then focus on whatever project I currently am in the process of designing, which could be for a number of different things happening around the UC. Once a project is fully ready for print I will go ahead and make copies of the posters in various formats and deliver them to the intended client. Additionally I may offer feedback to the work fellow designers and help out with any outstanding projects or tasks around the office.
What does being a UC employee mean to you?
Being a UC employee means that everyday I get to represent what the UC stands for, and as a freshman, I have been gradually learning throughout the year what exactly that means for myself and the community. What I have learned is that I have become a part of a hard-working group of people that inspire excellence and are dedicated to creating the best possible environment for students to learn and grow. Everyday I strive to follow this path of excellence, build new skills and bring a positive attitude to my job in order to contribute to the UC’s mission.
What are some of the most memorable days/moments working for the UC?
Some of the most memorable days working in the UC would have to be when our department gets together for our monthly unit meetings. Naturally, everyone has their own schedules so it is rare to catch a glimpse of every person during your average week, but during our meetings is a chance for everyone to collaborate with each other and see one another face to face. Being able to join together and discuss important ideas makes you appreciate the place you are in, the people around you, and the collective goals you are working towards as a team.
Why should students visit the UC?
Students should visit the UC because there are so many ways to enjoy it and utilize all it has to offer. I have lost count of the number of events the UC has to provide the students with because every week there is something new. As a first-year student on campus, it was such a relief to have a place to go that could bring you new friends and cater to your every need. If I had a question about something, the information desk was there to help, if I was hungry there was food, and if I needed somewhere to study, there was a quiet corner. All of these things created a safe and comfortable place for me to go no matter how I was feeling.
How will your position at the UC help you in your future career?
My position at the UC is gaining me real life experience into what a career as a Graphic Designer could look like for me. There are so many valuable skills I am learning on the job including time management, collaborating, Adobe capabilities, problem-solving, and so much more. I am so grateful to have this opportunity because I am learning a host of new things through this experience that will prepare me for whatever the future brings.
How do you balance school, work, extracurricular activities, and a social life?
Balancing the different aspects of life has its challenges, but as someone who likes to keep everything organized, I find that a calendar and a to do list always does the trick. With classes, work, and all the other social components of life coming into play, as long as I write it all down and prioritize what needs to get done, everything always works out.
