What It Is / Who Can Participate:
UWW DanceScapes is a dynamic dance production through the UW-Whitewater Theatre and Dance Department, directed by Eric Appleton. Open to both students and community members, DanceScapes invites anyone with an interest in movement to audition. It’s more than just a performance; it’s a space where dancers can explore, create, and grow in a supportive, welcoming environment.
Why You Should Audition:
One of the most exciting aspects of DanceScapes is its inclusivity. The cast is made up of dancers of all experience levels, from those with years of studio training to those stepping into a dance studio for the very first time. No matter your background, DanceScapes encourages you to take that leap and try something new.
A Commitment That Fits You:
DanceScapes is designed to be flexible, allowing dancers to shape their own experience. Performers can participate in up to four pieces, with each piece rehearsing about three hours per week. Whether you want to fully immerse yourself or just dip your toes in, the level of commitment is entirely up to you.
Perfect For First-Time Dancers:
It’s not uncommon for first-time dancers to join DanceScapes and quickly fall in love with it. The environment is encouraging and low-pressure, making it an ideal place to step outside your comfort zone and discover a new passion.
What to Expect as a Performer
Auditions take place early in the fall semester, typically in late September or early October. Dancers learn a few short combinations so choreographers can get a sense of their movement style and strengths. After auditions, dancers may be invited to join specific pieces and can choose whether to accept.
Performers enroll in Practicum 200, a one-credit course graded on attendance. Rehearsals continue throughout the semester, leading up to a fall showing where pieces are reviewed. Selected works move forward to the spring performance, a fully produced show that brings months of work to the stage.
How You Can Support UWW DanceScapes:
Not a dancer? You can still be part of the experience. Attend a performance and support local artists while enjoying an evening of creativity and expression. There are also opportunities to get involved behind the scenes on the crew!
