My name is Alix McCorkle, I use she/hers pronouns and have been a UC employee for a 1 year now. I work for the UC Graphics and Marketing Office as one of three UC Marketing Assistants!
Tell us a little bit about your unit
I work in the Graphics & Marketing unit made up of 13 creative and dedicated graphic designers and marketing assistants. Our job is to create graphics and content for the UC as a whole, promoting the UC services/events and communicating an inviting and welcoming place for students. The graphic designers produce the graphics for all event/deadline posters and signage you see around the UC, and the marketing assistants are in charge of running and creating content for the UC social media platforms (Instagram, Facebook, and Snapchat).
What does an average day look like working for the UC? What does your position entail?
As a marketing assistant, each day is different from the last, which is something that I love about my role, but there are a handful of tasks that stay consistent from week to week. I start every week with going on my “poster run,” distributing posters (created by our wonderful graphic designers) around campus. Additionally, as a marketing assistant my main responsibility is to run the UC Instagram page, so after my poster run I start on my social media schedule for the following week and brainstorm captions, media, and posting times. When I am finished with my drafted schedule, I send it to our supervisor to proofread and approve for posting, and then gather and approve the content needed. Once I get the thumbs up on my captions and content, I schedule those, as well as our weekly “This Week #intheUC” story graphics, using Meta Business Suite.
In addition, some ongoing tasks of mine are posting Willie’s Pet of the Week on our IG Story every Wednesday, and posting events on our various campus calendars. Each marketing assistant is assigned a department to help with calendar submissions, so I draft calendar descriptions for UC Live events and submit those to the UWW calendar, Connect2, Google Business, and Whitewater Chamber. On top of that, I assist in leading our UC Student Marketing Committee, in which I coordinate bi-weekly meetings with other student marketing employees in all the UC departments and we discuss brand alignment, departmental efforts, and challenges and concerns.
What does being a UC employee mean to you?
Being a UC employee means being part of the heart of campus life! We pride ourselves on creating a welcoming, inclusive space where students can relax and connect. I see it as my responsibility to contribute to that atmosphere, whether through helping with events, offering assistance, or simply being a friendly face. It’s a chance to support my peers and enhance their college experience in small, but meaningful ways.
What are some of the most memorable days/moments working for the UC?
As a graduating senior, the days I am going to miss the most about working for the UC are the little moments when we have fun in the office and crack small jokes, go on rants of shared interests, and just have casual conversations as fellow students.
Why should students visit the UC?
From a student standpoint, the UC is a great place to hang out with friends, get some homework done, grab a bite to eat, and attend fun and unique events. There is really something for everyone and I love how the UC is a welcoming and inviting place for all people.
How will your position at the UC help you in your future career?
What I love about my position is that I am able to take what I learned in classes and actually apply that material. I have gained experience with relevant tools, including Hootsuite, Adobe Creative Cloud, Capcut, and Google Analytics, that I would not have gotten from the classroom.
How do you balance school, work, extracurricular activities, and a social life?
I’ll admit it, I have a lot more on my plate than I should, but I’m the kind of person who loves having a busy schedule! On top of working in the UC, some of my involvements include the UWW Dance Team, Pi Sigma Epsilon, and an undergraduate research project for Mu Kappa Tau. I’m also going through the job search process as I am graduating in May, so I would consider that an extracurricular activity in of itself. To juggle all of these commitments, I am a proud user of Google Calendar and adding the widget to my phone home screen, so I am always looking at what I have going on for the day. Outside of school, I always prioritize time on the weekends to hang out with my friends and roommates, whether that’s getting dinner in Janesville, having a movie night, or playing Just Dance on the Wii.
