Tell us a little bit about yourself.

My name is Michael Maher and my pronouns are He/Him/His. I am a marketing assistant in the UC Graphics and Marketing department and I have had this job since January 2022.

What does an average day look like working for the UC? What does your position entail?

I like to say that there is no “average day” when it comes to my job, and that’s how I like it. Once a week I usually walk around campus to different buildings putting up UC event posters. On other days I update calendars, plan social media schedules, and create marketing content for UC Snapchat. But then there’s days where I end up putting on a bunny suit or compete in an office chair Mario Kart race. All for marketing purposes of course. I like that every day I get to come to work not expecting what my day might end up looking like. Marketing requires being flexible and this job is a great platform for that.

What does being a UC employee mean to you?

Being a UC employee to me means being part of an overall mission. A mission to serve students and be part of the welcoming and supportive environment that the UC stands for. If I can offer a smile or any sort of assistance to someone, then I feel fulfilled in my role as a UC employee. I don’t limit myself to just marketing. I can make a true difference in my role as a UC employee.

What are some of the most memorable days/moments working for the UC?

There are probably way too many to list here. In all honesty every day ends up having at least one memorable moment. I believe it was a typical Wednesday afternoon in the office one day when I got asked to throw on a bunny suit to promote Glow Bunny Bowl at Warhawk Alley. And I did it without question. Another memorable moment was a day when I was sitting in the office working with my team when a robot rolled by our office. It was a prototype that was programmed to follow its owner around and had the capability to carry personal belongings.

Why should students visit the UC?

Students should visit the UC for the sole purpose of the fact that the UC always has something going on. There are fun events every week and many of them are free to attend! Movies, trivia, bowling, games, bingo, workshops, and so much more happen in the UC all year long. It also has some fantastic food and drink options and is a great place to meet up with friends.

What is one piece of advice you can give to current UW-W students?

One piece of current advice I can give UW-W students is to challenge yourself. Take on new opportunities even if they seem difficult at first. Sometimes what ends up being the most beneficial to your learning are the things that seemed challenging at first. Always look to build on your skill set with new skills and knowledge attained from others.

What is an accomplishment you are most proud of?

One accomplishment that I am most proud of is my “2-22-22” promotion. I was given this special event promotion to take lead on and I’m proud of how the event turned out. Even with a horrendous snowstorm that day, we still managed to make the event fun and I was able to give away a lot of cool prizes to students on the spontaneous day.
