BSU turns 40; campus history

UWW’s Black Student Union is celebrating 40 years at UWW on Sat., March 7th, in the Hamilton Center (University Center). The ticketed event includes cocktails at 5 p.m., dinner at 6 p.m., and a program featuring guest speaker Arline Hardy-Smith, the first African-American student to graduate from UWW.

Interested in campus history? The Library collects resources that document our history, such as the campus yearbook, The Minneiska (3rd-floor Main OVERSIZE Collection, LD6160 .W45), which was published from 1909-1991, and A history of Wisconsin State University, Whitewater, 1868-1968 (3rd-floor Main Collection, LD6160 .W452). The student newspaper, The Royal Purple, is available on microfilm for the period March 1908-May 1998 (1st-floor microforms room), and in print since 1901 in the Library’s Special Collections/University Archives. The most recent year in print also is kept in the 1st-floor newspapers area. In addition to maintaining an archive of the paper, some of the Library’s dedicated student workers have been creating an online index to search for topics and names. You also can contact the University Archives to inquire about lesser-known resources documenting the University’s history, including photographs, slides, and scrapbooks.

Bird migration & climate change

Every spring I love hearing the birds after the long cold winter, but there may be changes coming in the songs I hear. My iGoogle widgets sent me to a ScienceDaily article “Birds’ movements reveal climate change in action.” Data collected over 40 years of Audubon’s Christmas Bird Count show that 58% of 305 widespread species that winter on the continent have shifted significantly north since 1968. The report, Birds and climate change: Ecological disruption in motion, is online.

Birds of Two Worlds coverIf you’re interested in more information, on either bird migration or climate change, the Library has resources for you! Search the Library Catalog to find titles such as Birds of two worlds: the ecology and evolution of migration (3rd-floor OVERSIZE Main Collection, QL698.9 .B575 2005) and the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency’s 1999 pamphlet Climate change and birds: change on the wing.

Search the Library’s article databases, such as Academic Search Premier (EBSCOhost) to find articles including “Impact of climate change on migratory birds: community reassembly versus adaptation” in Global Ecology & Biogeography (Jan. 2008, vol.17, no.1, pp. 38-49).

Information about Executive Order 13186: Responsibilities of Federal Agencies to Protect Migratory Birds is available online from the EPA also.

Please ask a librarian for assistance with finding additional materials.

Women’s History Month film festival

In honor of Women’s History Month, the UW-Whitewater Women’s Issues Committee, Women’s Studies Department, and the Women’s Resource Center are sponsoring a free film festival of documentaries by and about women.

All films will be shown on Wednesdays at 7 p.m., in the Summers Auditorium of the James R. Connor University Center. The schedule is:

* March 4: “The Education of Shelby Knox” : A self-described “good Southern Baptist girl,” 15-year-old Shelby Knox of Lubbock, Texas has pledged abstinence until marriage. But she becomes an unlikely advocate for comprehensive sex education when she finds that Lubbock, where high schools teach abstinence as the only safe sex, has some of the highest rates of teen pregnancy and STDs in the state.
* March 11: “Desire” : In the wake of Hurricane Katrina, DESIRE offers a poignant perspective on the complicated dynamics of race and class in New Orleans. The film documents the lives of a group of young women from the city–-two teenagers from the Desire housing projects in the Ninth Ward, a working class single mother, and two girls from a prestigious private school–-by letting them film their own stories. Masterfully interwoven throughout the film, these vibrant and candid shorts record the intimate dramas of the girls’ changing lives, and stand in stark contrast to mass media images of hopeless Katrina victims.
* March 18: “Girl Inside” : Following 26-year-old Madison during a crucial three years of her transition from male to female, GIRL INSIDE is a beautiful film that tracks her emotional, intellectual and spiritual journey of self-discovery that is as important as the physical journey of hormones and surgery. Sharing the spotlight is Vivien, Madison’s glamorous 80-year-old grandmother, who has taken on the job of advising her on all things feminine. While Vivien’s attempts to school Madison in old-fashioned codes of fashion and behavior are often hilarious, the juxtaposition of two vastly different experiences of womanhood, from different generations, raises profound issues about the nature of gender, femininity and sexuality.

The Future of the Wild

Presentation Zen:
Simple Ideas on Presentation Design & Delivery
By Garr Reynolds
HF5718.22 .R49 2008
New Book Island, 2nd floor

Think of the last presentation you saw, whether it was part of a class project or at a conference. What about the presentation did you like or dislike? Chances are that one of your reasons has something to do with the visual component of the speaker’s delivery, which most likely involved a Powerpoint slideshow (or overhead projector for old-schoolers). The fact of the matter is that the visual aspect will make or break you in terms of the audience’s overall satisfaction (or lackthereof) of the presentation. This week’s featured title provides the tips and tricks to engage our listeners with your slides.

Reynolds, former executive at Apple and current business professor in Japan, sat through one too many bad Powerpoint presentations and then decided to do something about it – he founded the most visited blog on presentation design. Given its success, he produced this book, which addresses the stages of presentation: preparation, design and delivery. He covers everything from the planning (think analog: whiteboards, post-its, *gasp* – pen and paper) to the look of the slides (signal v noise ratio and the rule of thirds) to the big day (“playing on one buttock” – read it and find out). It’s a quick and engaging read that will give even the most seasoned professionals a few more tricks to pull out of the bag.

Another cool thing – the preface, written by Guy Kawasaki, is a Powerpoint presentation. It’s pretty neat-o.

Who Buys That?

Did you know that:

How do I know all of these random facts? You might think that it’s all just useless information, but if you’re trying to design advertising campaign for a product, then these are golden nuggets. Maybe you need to profile who buys Bic pens versus Uni-ball pens. Whatever the case, Mediamark Reporter will give you the numbers to guide your analysis. Produced by Mediamark Research & Intelligence, the resource is a fountain of random and incredibly detailed information about consumers and their purchasing and media consumption habits. The Reporter contains over 550 product & service categories and 6,000 brands. Best of all, you can easily export the data to a spreadsheet for later use.

Want to know more? Check out the How to Use Mediamark Reporter guide or contact Kyle Naff, Business Librarian, at naffk@uww.edu or 472-5519.

This resource is restricted to UW-Whitewater faculty, staff and students and is for academic use only.

Cyber Crime

Have you been a victim of a cyber crime?  Have you heard of IC3?  It’s a place where cyber crimes can be reported and the data turned over to the authorities.  Check out their mission statement at http://www.ic3.gov/default.aspx.  It’s a good place to remember if you or someone you know becomes a victim.  IC3 also accept email scams, so if you are tired of those annoying emails trying to get money or personal information from you, then here’s a place to report it.  Act now.

Another tip: read the “avoid scams” section of any website before you make a purchase (eg. EBay http://reviews.ebay.com/Ebay-Scams-14-things-you-MUST-know_W0QQugidZ10000000001410441?ssPageName=BUYGD:CAT:-1:SEARCH:4  or Craig’s List http://www.craigslist.org/about/scams).

Be a smart consumer and don’t let those criminals make you a victim.
