Miracle of 34th Street

From November 2nd – December 23rd, the Fireside is hosting Miracle on 34th Street: The Musical. It’s a Christmas tale that is inspirational will get you in the spirit for the holidays that are just around the corner. The play is also based off a Christmas movie, so if your significant other is obsessed with Christmas, this is a great idea to surprise them with to see. Now, the Fireside is a lot more expensive than the Young Auditorium because it comes with dinner, but the great thing is, is that they do offer many selections for what days and times you can attend the play. That means you’re able to see it on a Tuesday at 1:00 in the afternoon, or see it on a Saturday at 1:30 p.m. or 7:30 p.m. It also gives you a menu as to what is going to be served as the appetizer, entrée and dessert! Each meal for each play that is presented at the Fireside has its own theme to it. For example, for dessert they are having red velvet cake with gingerbread ice cream to celebrate the idea of Christmas. The Fireside is in Fort Atkinson which is not too bad of a drive from Whitewater. The longest it would take to go would be 25 minutes’ tops. The theater is a very classy place with many gift shops and great acting. I have gone there myself and was very impressed. Going on a date to The Fireside would be something you can put in the books for...

The Nutcracker

Many couples enjoy having a night of fine dining and heading to a play afterwards, especially during the winter time. For a date night idea, I have come to the thought of going to plays and experiencing other atmospheres other than staying in for the night. Whitewater’s Young Auditorium has been known to host some of the best theatrical plays in the area and that are plenty to see if you are interested in the plays that are being presented for this month of December. The Nutcracker is a play that everyone knows about or has seen. It’s a classic tale, and if you have not seen it, now is the perfect time to watch one of the most magical holiday stories on stage. The Nutcracker will be playing on Thursday, December 16that 2:00 p.m. and 7:00 p.m. and the ticket prices range from $15-$22. Before the play, you and your significant other can grab a bight at one of the few restaurants we do have in Whitewater. As I have mentioned before in a previous blog post, 841 Brewhouse and Second Salem are on the fine dining side of things. You can also grab a slice of pizza at Gus’, or tend to Cozumel or Taco Fresco. There are options of what can do to make the night a special one. For some people, plays may not be their forte, but getting out of your comfort zone is something you are supposed to do in life. It’s nice to see that maybe you would enjoy a play once in a while because it’s something you both could talk...

Brew Date Night

Located right near the outskirts of Whitewater is a small brewing and grill restaurant called Second Salem. Salem is one of the many restaurants that students head to after a long day of exams or a night out before heading downtown. Salem has also been known to have unique names to their own brews. Such as the Best of Bray Road Amber Ale, the Black Mass Stout, the Witchtower Pale Ale and many more! Each of their beers has a different name with a different illustrated picture. For this year, a new brew is coming to Second Salem and that brew is called Killer Hill Winter Ale. On Saturday, December 2nd, Second Salem will be hosting a ‘release party’ introducing the new beer. There will be live music featuring, The Brothers Quinn, starting at 9 p.m. and tapping’s of the winter ale. The photo of the newly introduced beer is of a werewolf on a sled riding in the snow holding what I think to be the winter ale, high up like he’s proud of the beer. This event is hosted right in Whitewater, which means you and your significant other can head downtown and enjoy the live band and new brew. It gives you guys something to do on a cold winter Saturday night instead of staying inside. Like what I have said before, get out and go on adventures with your boyfriend/girlfriend. It makes some great stories to laugh about later. Visit Second Salem’s website to learn more about the event and to view their menu on food and...

Anchor Inn – Friday Night Fish Fry

Located in Edgerton, WI heading and right next to the largest Culver’s in the world, Anchor Inn is a bar/restaurant I recommend to anyone wanting a new place to dine at. Especially on a Friday night when you are craving a classic Wisconsin fish fry. Although, it is a drive from Whitewater, it’s a way for your date night to be somewhat of an adventure. You are traveling away from Whitewater with all the craziness of school for a few hours. Another few more reasons why Anchor Inn is the perfect place to dine is that it’s right on Lake Koshkonong and has amazing fish fry. The view + the food = perfection. The fish is something that will not disappoint you when you leave. I ordered the fried cod and was full after just the first one. I wanted to keep eating but couldn’t! It’s lightly battered while still holding the fish together. As you cut into the fish, it breaks apart, allowing you to take pieces and dip them in butter. Sides that come along with the fish is coleslaw, rye bread and french fries. You can substitute the fries for mashed potatoes or sweet potato fries as well. There are other options for what kind of seafood you are wanting to enjoy on a Friday night such as White Fish, Blue Gil or Cod. There also is the option of picking a Sesame Crusted Tuna with Wasabi soy sauce. As well as the fish fry, you will be in the company of a live band. Anchor Inn always has some sort of entertainment happening. Pick a...

841 Brew House – Friday Night Fish Fry

Located right on the outskirts of Whitewater, WI stands a quaint brew house with some of the most delicious food that you could have around a small campus town. 841 Brew House used to be Randy’s Supper Club, until a couple year ago, they changed the look and the menu. The restaurant is known for its appetizing Artichoke and Spinach dip and its, to-die-for burgers, but have you tried their seafood? Yes, 841 does have seafood and not just on Fridays! Their menu offers a wide variety from shrimp to salmon. 841 is right in town, so if you and your significant other are looking for a nice place to have a date night, 841 Brew House is the perfect place to dine on a Friday fish fry kind of night. Along with the fish, if you are of age, having a beer along with it is the perfect touch. My favorite is the baked cod. It is baked perfectly tender with their “signature lemon butter sauce”. The sides are just as good and very filling! The entire atmosphere of the restaurant is inviting and relaxing. After a long week of studying for exams and doing huge projects, you and your significant other can relax and enjoy the food that is being served. I promise that you won’t be disappointed with the food when you eat at 841. So on a Friday night when you are looking for a Fright night fish fry, head to 841 Brew House to satisfy your cravings on a Friday...

Ugly Sweaters & Karaoke

The University Center is located right in the heart of the UW-Whitewater campus where many events are going on that you might not even know about. This holiday, the UC – Down Under is hosting an Ugly Sweater and Karaoke Party on December 7th from 6-9 p.m. with FREE admission! Anyone is welcome to join a night of terrible singing and ugly sweaters. It’s a great way for you and your significant other to get to know how goofy you are that may be a little outside of your comfort zone. That’s what relationships are about. Getting out of your comfort zone and learning more about yourself than you ever have before. That’s what so great about relationships, it teaches you how to act like a complete fool with someone you can be your complete self with. You both could also meet other couples and make new friends! It’s a great way for you both to enjoy a night of being together and singing couple songs, like ‘Summer Lovin’’ from...

Parade of Lights

In Whitewater, it may seem boring to the both of you and realizing that not much happens, but you should know that this town has a lot of hidden gems during the holidays. One of them is the Parade of Lights on December 1st at 6 p.m. Their route will be heading down Main Street. Lights are something that symbolizes the holidays during the cold winter months and what better way to enjoy them than with your significant other? This parade is open to the public to sign up and make their own float for the parade. If you and your significant other can’t travel anywhere to see lights, this is a great compromise that is right in town. This parade will bring the town together to enjoy it and you can stay warm with having someone you like or love right next to you. If you look and search hard enough, Whitewater has small events happening everywhere, every night and the Parade of Lights is one of them. I mean come on, who doesn’t love a parade and lights?!...

Rotary Gardens Light Show

Yes, there is plenty to do in Chicago, but if you’re looking to stay around here for a light show, Janesville is the place to head to! It’s only a 25-minute drive which is not bad at all. In Janesville, they have a place for a light show to share with visitors how beautiful it is even in the winter time. The light show at Rotary Gardens will be starting on November 24th and 25th for their Grand Opening. The tickets are as low as $5 and the event will last till December 31st. They will open at 4:30 p.m. and lights go dark at 9 p.m. While visiting Rotary Gardens enjoying the lights, you can snag a hot cup off cocoa, coffee or cider served along with a cookie. Going to a light show is a great way to spend a date night because it’s calming and you can walk around the entire garden with mesmerizing lights all around you while enjoying a hot beverage. This is personally one of my favorite date ideas to do for a night out in Janesville during the holidays. After visiting the light show, you can head to a local restaurant in town for a late night dinner or snack. You won’t be burning too huge of a hole in your wallet with a date night like...

Christkindlmarket – Chicago

Winter is coming and that means that many dates ideas are going to be coming your way! The first of many I wanted to share that is related to the holidays is the Christkinlmarket that is held in Chicago from November 18-December 24 of this year at the Daley Plaza. Christkinlmarket is Chicago’s largest open-air market that is a favorite to the locals and to the visitors of the event. It is inspired by a Germany market and features iconic German merchandise you can purchase, such as nutcrackers, cukoo-clocks, beer steins, ornaments, wooden handcrafts and authentic food! This market is something that is very different than anything we would have in Whitewater, Milwaukee or Madison. Instead of making this an all-day event, it could be a pit stop for you and your significant other. Around the plaza, they have shops so you can do some holiday shopping done and maybe see a movie. Around the plaza, Chicago has a lot of fine dining and movies theaters, so maybe you guys could treat yourself after a long semester and a trip to Chicago could be holiday presents to each other. To get to Chicago from Whitewater isn’t going to be that tricky! You first must drive to Harvard, IL (46 min drive) and park your car in the train station parking lot. Inside of the building, you buy a two-way ticket for about $8 – make sure it’s two ways! You then wait for the train to come it’ll take you right to Chicago OTC. Here is a link to the bus route with schedules and where to get off https://metrarail.com/maps-schedules/train-lines/UP-NW...
