While the school year is ending, it is time to start looking for jobs in the summer. If you are like most people, you are probably nervous for your job interview. Here are 5 tips and tricks to gain confidence and nail that interview!

  1. Research the Company and Industry

Prior to the interview, spend some time researching the company as well as the industry that it is in. Having knowledge of the company is crucial to being hired. As a matter of fact, it is reported that almost 50% of hiring managers have eliminated candidates after an interview because they had zero knowledge of the company. The research doesn’t have to be extensive, just a general background knowledge.

  1. Anticipate Interview Questions/Create Mock Interview

Look up common interview questions and come up with answers for all of them. Click here for a list of common interview questions. Rehearse answering these questions in the mirror or in front of someone. I recommend dressing up and doing a full mock interview. Practicing this will prepare you for answering any question the interviewer throws at you.

  1. Bring a Copy of Your Resume

Although the employer already has a copy of your resume, it is professional to bring your own. Print off your resume on higher quality paper. I would recommend putting your resume in a padfolio or something to carry it in. Click here for a list of different ways to carry your resume that you can buy. This little difference makes you look prepared and can separate you from other candidates.

  1. Be Yourself and Answer Confidently

Showing confidence is an instant first impression that catches the attention of an employer. Greet the hiring manager with a smile and firm handshake. Introduce yourself with confidence. Relax and take a deep breath if you are nervous, and remember that you were chosen out of many other applicants for an interview. You landed the interview, now it is time to seal the deal.

  1. Follow Up with a Thank You Note

Following the interview, make sure to send a thank you note to the hiring manager. Thank them for taking the time to meet with you and that you look forward to hearing back from them. This should be done within 48 hours of the interview.

Preparing for an interview can be stressful, but it may not be as bad as you think. Using these tips will help calm your nerves and give you more confidence. Good luck with the job searching, Warhawks!
