Name-brand vs. store (off) brand

People always ask, “is the store brand as good as the name brand?” Sometimes the answer is no, but honestly, a majority of the time it really it. It all depends on the type of products you’re buying, food, cleaning supplies, paper products, clothing, but I have some to notice that the store brand is just as good, if not better.

Bringing snacks with you

I am sound like a mom in this post, but seriously, bring snacks with you for anything and everything you do. You would be lying to yourself if that hasn’t been at least a handful of times that your mom told you to bring a snack, but you didn’t, and then you were starving. You asked if you could go buy a snack somewhere and what did she say? “No, I told you to bring a snack and you chose not to.” You may be 20+ years old, but I think it’s time to learn that bringing snacks is one of the best things you could do.

What should you be saving for?

Some day, you’re going to want to purchase something that will be over $300, or even over $1,000. Some day you’re going to have an unexpected injury or something breaking in your home that needs to be fixed ASAP. You will need money saved to be able to pay for it unless you want to be on a year-long payment plan. Below I list some things that you should be saving for, even when in college.

Save money with an app!

Since we live in a world that revolves around technology and our phones (I don’t always believe this but it seems to be the norm), why not use your phone to save money! Finding coupons and earning free money has never been so easy, and it’s at the touch of your finger tips!

There are tons of apps available that earn you points by simply using them! Now I’m going to be real here, it takes a lot of “points” or “check-ins” to get something in return. Here are some apps I like to use to save money:

Finding Coupons

Now I know what you’re probably thinking: I’m not about to be that crazy coupon lady. I am not asking you to be like the people on Extreme Couponers, even though they’re kind of genius. They get stores to out them money in the end! But that also means that they probably purchased 35 bottles of mustard and who needs that much mustard!

Why You Should Save?

You may be asking, “what’s the whole point of saving when I want to do/buy stuff now?” It’s a valid question. Hopefully, you’ll be making money every week and don’t have to worry about getting behind on rent or other bills. However, that thought can and might be in the back of your mind. You don’t want to think about a day that you’ll loose your job, but you may have a day that you need a nesting fund. You could get in a accident, have your dishwasher go out, need to repair your car, the situations are endless.

However, not every situation will be a negative one. You may want to see your favorite band in concert, want a new pair of shoes, go on a weekend getaway with friends. You want to have that money readitly available to you for when you really need it.

What does it mean to budget?

Budgeting meaning different things to different people. Some people look at it as only having $100 a week to spend, and you need to pick how much you spend on what items. Other people look at it as spending still spending a $100 a week, but $50 is for groceries, $10 is for gas, and the rest is for activities. No matter how you look at budgeting, it all comes down to setting a limit on how much you can spend in a given time frame or at a given location.
