Savings/Budgeting

What should you be saving for?

Some day, you’re going to want to purchase something that will be over $300, or even over $1,000. Some day you’re going to have an unexpected injury or something breaking in your home that needs to be fixed ASAP. You will need money saved to be able to pay for it unless you want to be on a year-long payment plan. Below I list some things that you should be saving for, even when in college.

Car- Owning a car at a young age can be pricy. You already have to pay for gas, insurance, oil changes, tire rotations, and those are just normal things. What happens when something breaks or you get in a wreck? You’ll want some extra money on hand to be able to fix it then because otherwise your car may be out of commission for a while.

Apartment bills- Monthly bills can be unexpected, especially when you pay for heat/AC. You may think that each money will be $40, but what if one month you use the AC the whole month and the bill spikes? You don’t want to be that person that can’t pay the bill. Your roommates might get made if they have to pay your part and the landlord sure as hell won’t let you pay it late.

Trips- I love traveling! The only downside of it is that it isn’t cheap. I have spur the moment weekend trips to Chicago or the Wisconsin Dells happen quite often, and I never want to turn it down. Thankfully since I save, I can spare to drop a few hundred dollars on a fun weekend with the girls.

Random medical bills- Even if someone says “I’m careful and never get hurt” that doesn’t protect them. If it’s icy out, you could fall and hurt your leg. You could fracture an ankle from playing basketball. You could fall and hit your head resulting in a concussion. The senerios are endless, so be prepared. Always have money set aside for medical bills because they add up fast!
