What is your favorite thing about being an RA?: The relationships the form with all the people I get to meet.

What else are you involved in?: AMA

Piece of advice for other RA’s: The RA job isn’t always going to be easy, but when you push through the tough times it’s well worth it.

Best story so far: Some residents don’t always know you’re an RA. So I’ve had some interesting experiences with residents like these. The look on their faces when they find out you are an RA is always priceless.

Anything else?: Being an RA is probably going to be one of the most memorable aspects of college for me.

Thank you, Brandin, for being a Radical RA.

Favorite Band:  Timeflies,  and The Fray
Favorite Dining Hall: Drumlin

What I see myself doing in five years:  Working in the medical field, doing either medical research or a health care profession.
Why did you become an RA?: My RA’s last year inspired me to get involved on campus which really made my first year here memorable and exciting. I made a  lot of new friends and had fun opportunities I wouldn’t have had if I didn’t become involved. I became an RA to help other residents get involved and have similar experiences, whether it’s their first year or last year on campus.
What is your favorite thing about being an RA?: Seeing residents get to know each other, and build relationships together.
What else are you involved in?: National Residence Hall Honorary,  Community Service and Awareness Coordinator for Homecoming Steering Committee

Radical RA: Vincent Ashford

Vincent Ashford is the RA on 4th floor Clem which is an all male floor. Vince is a senior with a major in Interpersonal Communication.

Preferred Name: Vincent, Vinny, Vince, Vin (All encompasses who I am)

Favorite Sport: Football

Favorite Sports team: New Orleans Saints

Favorite Band: One Republic
Favorite Dining Hall: Drumlin
Dream job: Game Tester

What I see myself doing in five years: Being an awesome person in whatever field I choose to apply my talents in

Favorite Quote: “A person who never made a mistake never tried anything.”

Why did you become an RA?: I became an RA to help guide people enjoy their college career. A lot of people come to college and choose to work and do homework, and if that works for you then that’s cool. I want to help people see that their are more to college then just that and as an RA you get to help mold that mentality.
What is your favorite thing about being an RA?: So far my floor has been awesome all around. Of course you have those nights where they are a little loud, but they keep you on your toes and are always fun to be around.
What else are you involved in?: Since this was my first semester as an RA I wanted to slow down so I’m involved in the Assembly of Resident Assistants and in it I am one of the reps of it for the Residence Hall Association or RHA.
Piece of advice for other RA’s: Make time for yourself. I know that coming into the position I thought I had to be here for the floor 24/7 just in case something comes up. The thing about this position is that we are always working unlike other jobs where we clock in and clock out. Go to other halls, go to other buildings on campus, explore the city of Whitewater, or just get out of Whitewater altogether. Do something to get your mind off of the position and when you come back your floor will seem a lot brighter.
Best story so far: One night, I’m hanging out in my room and I happen to hear the duty RAs on my floor. This was the day of the Willie’s Fun House so one of the duty RAs were walking with a balloon rubber duck around his waist. So as I’m making room on my futon for them to take a seat one of my residents observes the duck and immediately asks the person to come inside his room. The RA kindly obliged and spoke to the resident, and while speaking to him the resident asks the RA if they would like a shot of alcohol for having such an awesome balloon animal. The RA kindly refused and walks into my room. He says “please tell me that that resident is of age.” I ask why and he tells me what happened. I responded with no one in that room is of age. So unfortunately the resident got documented, but till this day that has been my best story.

Favorite Quote: Be happy for this moment, for this moment is your life
Why did you become an RA?: I became an RA because I wanted to become a role model for underrepresented students on campus
My favorite thing about being an RA, is having the opportunity to see students grow and develop with knowing that you have helped them.
Involvement: I am in Latinos Unidos, Club Tennis, Hawk Squad, and a member of Lambda Alpha Upsilon Fraternity, Inc.
Advice for other RA’s:  Do not let your residents get too comfortable with you to the point where they don’t respect your authority There is a thin line between being their friend and their RA.
“A resident one time slipped a note underneath my door. The note said that I have helped him so much transitioning from high school into college. The note also said that he was grateful to have an RA like myself that’s not judgmental and was passionate about the job. This just goes to show that us RAs may not know the impact we have on our resident lives, but when little things like this happens it goes a long ways.”
Thanks for being a Radical RA, Jordan!

Diversity Advocates

On campus, we have students who go out of their way to promote diversity and conversations facilitating diversity. These students are trained by Residence Life. One of their main goals is to provide correct and current information for student diversity related issues.

These are our Diversity Advocates, or DA’s. They have different levels of Safe Zone certification. Plus, DA’s provide an arsenal of seven programs to combat ignorance. They are:

Diversity 101; Diversity 201; Multiple Identities Relax; We’re All the Same INSIDE; Disability; That’s so GAY, and that’s OK; Breaking the Binary; Overseas, Oversight.

More information about these can be found at http://www.uww.edu/residencelife/staff/diversity-advocates.

One of the DA’s Cassie Steirner tell us more!

“I am Cassie Steiner, a Diversity Advocate (DA) and the Diversity and Inclusion Intern for Residence Life this year. I have been a Diversity Advocate for two years, and it has taught me so much. Since becoming a Diversity Advocate, I have learned a lot about different areas of diversity including race, gender, sexual orientation, privilege, ability and multicultural communication. Recently, I have been learning a lot about age and weight discrimination as we create some new programs. Beyond that, being a DA has taught me how to have some challenging or taboo conversations and how to listen and be empathetic to others’ experiences. Having these conversations in and out of programs is something that I truly enjoy, and it is just one reason I love being a DA!”

Change is Life Changing by Stephanie Ruch

This is my 3rd year here as an RA at the University of Wisconsin-Whitewater. My first two years as an RA here on campus I was in a traditional residence hall on a floor with all freshman. I took pride in how my floor community grew in the short time that my residents lived together. I truly believe that the bonds I helped create will be friendships my residents will have for the rest of their lives. Our floor became one big happy family after merely weeks of knowing one another. There was an overwhelming sense of trust that my residents found in me. There were residents that would come tell me every detail of their day, some that would walk the floors and stop in every single room to check in on their floor mates, and others that came to me in the time of crisis that trusted me enough to know what to do in order to help them with their situation. We never felt awkward seeing each other walking down the hall in a towel, because that was just part of living here. I saw their every move and knew everything about each of my residents, weather I wanted to or not. I guess that was just a continuation on our “Fish Bowl” philosophy that we RAs hear about so often. I loved being an RA on an all-freshman floor. I loved the atmosphere, and I loved that my residents would notice if I left town for a few hours. Every time I would return to my room I would have a note on my whiteboard telling me that someone needed to talk to me, and although this life seemed nearly perfect, my RA life was about to change.

In any aspect of my life, change is hard. I am horrible at making decisions, and I am even worse at adapting to big changes. I enjoy following the “If it isn’t broke, don’t fix it” philosophy. My life was perfect. “I love being surrounded by my needy freshman, so why did they move me?” I asked myself when I received my placement letter. I was going to be an RA in Starin Hall. A residence hall completely of upperclassman, living in apartment style suites.  I know nothing about upperclassman. They are quite, and boring, and they all just do their own thing. Starin is quite, that is not a good fit for someone as obnoxious as myself. The past two years I have had “Open Door Charts” where I would walk the floors daily and give a sticker to any resident with their door open. I did this religiously, and all of my residents fought over who would get the most by the end of the semester. But in Starin, the doors close automatically. I knew this was going to be a huge change for me. I hated change, especially something that would affect my entire life. RAs all across campus would kill to be in Starin, and I never asked for this… So why me? Why did they do this?

Training came around, and I tried my best to attend sessions about how to handle upperclassman. I just assumed they would be able to take care of themselves.  Move-in day rolls around and they all knew exactly where they were headed. Nobody asked me where the bathroom was on the floor because they each had their own bathroom in their suite. They didn’t ask how to get their books or class schedule, how to set up their wifi, or where the big white tent was to register for Club U Dub Dub. So what was my purpose? Why was I even on the floor? It certainly wasn’t because anyone needed me. I had a really hard time getting started, and getting motivated to meet and interact with my residents. “Being around” on my floor seemed pointless for so long. I would sit in my room and be able to get an entire paper done without being interrupted by my residents! To some this may seem wonderful, but for me it wasn’t. I was lonely. I wanted things to be how they used to be. I wanted residents to need me. So, I decided to go exploring! I decided to venture out on my floor more often and get to know my residents. The room structure for RAs in Starin, in my opinion, is the biggest curse. Because of the size of the room you have no way of having your living area in view of the door. So unless I was laying in my bed, even with my door open, I could never see my residents walking down the hall way. The RA room is also really close to the end of the hall way, and super far away from the elevators, so a majority of residents never even walk all the way down to where my room is. But instead of sitting here and moping about things I cannot change. I decided to take action. I realized that if I sat up by the elevator doors, or in the lounge area outside my room. I was much more visible to the residents. Any time they would walk down the hall, they would seem me doing my homework out there at the table, and they would stop to chat. These little conversations grew to bigger and deeper conversations, and before I knew it, I was starting to get to know my residents. Granted, I don’t know who their high school best friends were, or what their favorite type of music is, or what the top item on their bucket list may be, but I do know other things. I know they are getting close to graduating. I know what their career will be in just a few short months. I know that they have put in many hours of work to get to where they are today, and I know that have big goals for the years to come. I realized that my residents still need me. They just need me in different ways.       In other halls they may put on programs about good study habits or how to stay organized, but here I was much more likely to work with my residents and help assist them put on the programs they want to put on. Some of my residents love to cook, and they wanted to cook an entire Thanksgiving dinner for the floor. It turned out really well and everyone loved it, but it was the residents that took initiative to put on that program. Another thing is that spontaneous programming with residents is a bit more planned. Everyone here is super involved and usually really busy. I noticed that instead of just showing up and watching a movie with my residents, the spontaneous programs are more planned. We have to work around our schedules to fit in a little game night or something, but I feel like the quality of programs is still wonderful. It has taken time for me to realize that my residents here in Starin still need me. They just need me in different ways then my residents did before. Earlier I mentioned that I am really social, and one of my favorite aspects of the First Year Student floor was the social atmosphere and community we built. Helping to create that atmosphere is a strength of mine, and that skill can be translated here even though it is much more difficult to do so. In Hein’s sight I am able to see why I was transferred to this new hall, and that reason is to help make Starin’s overall atmosphere more social and welcoming. At this point my floor seems more social than any other. Residents bounce from suite to suite, and they are starting to build wonderful friendships.  Our floor has been the host floor for many events, and I often see residents from other floors or off campus housing coming here to study or socialize with my residents.

Overall, this year has been a huge change for me, but I am so honored that I was given this challenge. I was able to create new ways to take the skills I gained over the past two years and alter them to accommodate my new floor. Typically I say that Change is hard, and that remains true. This move was hard for me, but I’ve realized now that I would not want to change this experience for anything. I love my residents, my floor, my staff, my hall, and each and every new experience that I was able to have while here. I have realized that this change was life changing, and I would not want to trade it for anything in the world.

October’s Best!

RA of the Month – Lawrence Bell

Cambridge/Fox Meadows RA – Our staff has nominated Lawrence Bell as the RA of the month because he is always around helping residents and fellow RAs out. LB always has his door open, and usually has a resident in his room either helping them with a problem or just chatting. Lawrence is always in a good mood and always putting the residents and other staff members first. He goes above and beyond what is expected, for example he took duty for homecoming weekend and Halloween weekend.

Bulletin Board of the Month – “Coexist” by Lawrence from Cambridge/Fox Meadows

Cambridge/Fox Meadows Bulletin Board – I want to nominate Lawrence’s bulletin board for the month of October. Cambridge, Fox Meadows, and Starin were assigned the topic of diversity, so Lawrence created this “coexist” bulletin board. It is bright and colorful, which makes it stand out. It’s also one of those boards that you have to stop and look at because it’s hard to read at first glance. I’ve seen a lot of people stop and read the entire board, and I know Lawrence took a lot of time to create this awesome board!

Program of the Month – “Roll It Up, Hash It Out…Not Tryin’ to be Blunt!”

Lee Program of the Month – I nominated “Roll It Up, Hash It Out…Not Tryin’ To Be Blunt!” a marijuana awareness program that was put on by Sam Krueger and Betsy Jordan! It consisted of a scavenger hunt of paper marijuana leaves that contained facts about laws on marijuana, consequences of getting caught by the police and ResHall violations, and some effects it has on the human body. We had about 15-20 residents show up for it! There were cupcakes and a raffle for three prize bundles as well!

AODA Peer Educator – Ally Beckum

Alcohol and Other Drug Peer Educators teach residents across campus about the importance of responsible alcohol use and the truth about drugs. These AODA Peer Educators also facilitate discussions during programs in the Residence Halls.

Ally says, “I’m a Junior here at UW Whitewater. My major is Psychology and my minor is Criminal Justice. My ultimate career goal is to be a Substance Abuse Counselor in the prison system. I have been a part of this team for 3 years now. I am the only original member left. I chose to apply for the position because it looked like it could be a good way to involved; I had no idea it would lead me to discover what I want to do with my life. I have learned so many things from this. I am far from the  little Freshman who was terrified of public speaking. I can now speak in front of any size group with confidence, be a supportive listener/advice giver to my peers, and look at issues with a non judgmental point of view. I absolutely love being an AODA Peer Educator. It has opened up so many doors that I could never have anticipated.”

Thanks for all your hard work! Keep it up! To request an AODA program, visit http://reslife.uww.edu/aoda/index.php#tab4

Piece of advice for other RA’s: Take advantage of all opportunities and enjoy it because once it ends you will miss it!
Best story so far: I have many stories of residents who I have seen come to this university with no purpose, no direction and no clue about what they want to do; Seeing them grow up, develop, discover themselves, and take on leadership roles has been awesome.  Proud mom moment 🙂
Anything else?: Shout out to all of my present and past residents, bosses, and staff members-you have all made my experience great 🙂
