Superconnect

Superconnect
Harnessing the Power of Networks
and the Strength of Weak Links
by Richard Koch and Greg Lockwood
HM741 .K67 2010
New Book Island, 2nd floor

We all know that saying that ‘it’s not about WHAT you know, it’s about WHO you know.’ In this day and age, digital networks give a individual’s personal, professional and social networks a much more visible presence, displaying those relationships for all to see (depending on your privacy settings). This week’s featured title looks at how these connections can impact your life.

Koch, business strategist and author of the wildly successful 80/20 Principle, and Lockwood, venture capitalist that invests in network businesses, come together to describe how your family, friends, colleagues and acquaintances all factor into the potential for advancement in your life and career. They examine the types of connections between people – strong relationships, weak links and hubs (groups) – and their behavior, which may be counter-intuitive. The authors use real-life examples, like the run-in with a former classmate and finding love through your neighbor’s landscaper [take that, E-harmony!]. Interestingly enough, they indicate that it doesn’t take a massive networking effort – leverage what you already have.

Thanks to Denise for the link!

Films on Demand

FOD logo
Andersen Library added Films on Demand last year. It’s a collection of thousands of streamed videos from Films for the Humanities & Sciences and Cambridge Educational.

New titles are added all the time. Recent additions reflect the range of disciplines in this resource and include both new & older titles, e.g., Animal Minds (1994), Dylan Thomas (1994), Modern Slavery: Human Trafficking (2008), The Future of Food: A Looming Crisis (2009), The Worst Offenders: Can They Change? (2010), Virus Hunters (2009), and Cutting It In Costume: Design and Wardrobe Management (2009).

The Library’s guide to Films on Demand explains how to link to films (or segments of films) for class use (to view in class or assign to be viewed outside of class). If you have any questions, please ask a librarian for assistance!

Of course, Andersen Library also has videos in VHS and DVD formats, and they can be booked for in-class showing or placed on reserve for a class. Search the HALCat library catalog to see if we have a title you need.

Is the Web Donezo?

Real quick: is the web donezo (or is it donzo)?

Carol and Martha forwarded a few interesting articles – one from Wired Magazine and the other from BoingBoing – about the death of the Web. The two discuss the death of the web, offering differing viewpoints on the issue.

What do you think? Read the articles and decide for yourself.

Wired Magazine: The Web Is Dead. Long Live the Internet
BoingBoing: Is the web really dead?

Geoforensics

Geoforensics
by Alastair Ruffell & Jennifer McKinley
QE38.5 .R85 2008
New Book Island, 2nd floor

I remember sitting in my dorm room my sophomore year, trying to be the good student, while my roommate would watch hour after hour of Law & Order. Not surprisingly, I would stop studying and get sucked into the criminal investigations. If you lost hours of your life to shows like L&O, CSI or NCIS, then this week’s featured title should pique your interest as well.

Ruffell and McKinley, professors from Queen’s University in Belfast, have compiled an extensive introduction into the field of geoforensics, which is loosely defined as the “application of geoscience techniques to criminal investigations of what happened, where and when it occurred and how and why it took place.” They begin with the large-scale applications, such as remote sensing, and work their way to the small stuff, like soils, used by law enforcement to crack the cases. You’ll learn all about how Earth science plays into national and international crime investigation. And if you don’t get enough, the authors provide a ton of references for further research.

New & returning faculty & instructional staff:

Clip art of man with questionNeed to set up course reserves? Make links to articles in databases available via D2L? These and other “Library essentials” will be covered at the orientation to Library Services and Resources on Thursday, August 26th, 2:30 p.m. (Library Instruction Lab L2211).

Jungle Jack comes to Whitewater!

OK, I’m repeating this blog from July 16th because the event happens this Sunday, August 29th:

“Jungle Jack” Hanna is coming to Whitewater on August 29th (6 pm, Whitewater High School gym). I can hardly believe it! I’ve watched his Saturday morning shows on TV and enjoyed his appearances on late-night talk shows.

UWW students and staff may borrow his 1989 biography (called Monkeys on the interstate: And other tales from America’s favorite zookeeper) from another UW library via the free Universal Borrowing service. A couple of videos are at the Irvin L. Young Memorial Library (Whitewater’s public library at 431 W. Center St.). Ask a librarian for assistance with finding materials, if desired.

Tickets for the event can be purchased at various spots in town–read all about it on the Whitewater Banner web site. Proceeds from ticket sales are to benefit downtown Whitewater with new bike racks and holiday decorations.
