Falls Aren't Funny

Falls Aren’t Funny:
America’s Multi-Billion-Dollar
Slip-and-Fall Crisis
by Russell Kendzior
RD93 .K46 2010
New Book Island, 2nd floor

As a huge fan of FAILBlog, I’ve become accustomed to seeing cringe-inducing stunts-gone-very-wrong on a daily basis, some of which may be humorous. So when I saw this week’s featured title on the shelf, I couldn’t help but give it a look.

Kendzior, CEO of Traction Experts and founder of the National Floor Safety Institute, isn’t laughing when it comes to the slips and falls. He takes this $80 billion issue very seriously. In three parts, the author examines the accidents themselves and the damage caused, the cause of the falls and then what can be done to address them. Kendzior provides plenty of data and statistics to back up his claims, pulling from his own organization, the National Safety Council, the Occupational Safety and Health Agency (OSHA) and others to illustrate the severity of slips and falls.

Keeping up with the news?

image of newspaperIt’s important to look up from your textbooks once in a while…so here’s a weekly quiz to see if you know what’s been going on lately around the country and the world! It’s “Calling All Newshounds” from USA Today.

If you don’t do very well, you might want to make a habit of visiting some bookmarked news sites, catching the news on the radio or TV, or even reading a newspaper or news magazine (Andersen Library has several, and the most current issues are on the 2nd floor–you can even read a couple of papers on the newspaper Kindle).

Google Speeds Up

Tired of waiting for your Google search results? Well, Google read your mind! According to the CNN Tech article “New Google Instant shows search results as you type,” Google rolled out Google Instant in the U.S. yesterday. As you type a search into the Google search box, it will suggest results you might be wanting. If the right thing appears you can just click it and quit typing. What a timesaver! According to the article,

Google says the average web search currently takes about 25 seconds: nine second to type it, less than one second for Google to return a result and 15 seconds to pick the best result.

They say Google Instant will shave two to five seconds off of that time.

Thank Ronna for bringing it to my attention.
