Linkin Park Share Stories of Chester, Band’s Legacy, Advice to New Musicians in Fan Q&A

Linkin Park celebrates the 20th anniversary of their debut album, Hybrid Theory, with a one-time only global stream event that they’ve called “Q&A With Linkin Park + Projekt Revolution 2002.” In their first group interview since 2017, they answered questions from fans, shared their favorite memories of [lead singer] Chester Bennington, offered advice to aspiring musicians, and much more. Then to top it off, they streamed a previously recorded (but never publicly released) full concert from their Projekt Revolution tour in 2002.

The influence that Linkin Park has had on newer artists and musicians is astounding and is visible in so many different bands. When asked how it felt to hear their legacy live on in others’ music, singer Mike Shinoda said, “Going back to how much music has changed, it is one of the things that I’m most proud to have been a part of, the blending boundaries and the approaches that we’ve taken.”

When asked what advice he would give to those who are just starting out on their musical journeys in regards to challenges and making connections with fans, drummer Rob Bourdon said, “When I look back on Hybrid Theory, I realize it was completely authentic to the music that resonated with us. Even though we got rejected so many times, we didn’t change what was ‘right for us,’ we stuck to it because we knew, for us, it was the right thing. For musicians and artists, being true to yourself, finding what that is and just doing it no matter what is the key ingredient to succeeding.”

Bassist Dave Farrell (Phoenix) shares a memory of the band’s first time playing at Rock Am Ring in Germany.

Before wrapping up the interview, the band was asked to describe their fondest memories of Chester. “He was always trying to make people feel better,” said turntablist Joe Hahn. “If he saw someone in a bad mood, he would never say ‘hey what’s wrong?’ He would just come over and start horsing around. I think that was a great energy to always have.”

Aside from the interview, the band’s long awaited 20th anniversary deluxe album has finally arrived with demo versions of many of the songs found on Hybrid Theory, such as “Points of Authority” and “Crawling,” B-side rarities like “Step Up” and “It’s Goin’ Down,” unreleased demos such as “Pictureboard” and “Part of Me,” and multiple live recordings.
