Retail Memes

Everyone has seen memes before and if you work retail, you can relate to so many of them out there.

Everyone in retail has experienced this before. JUST BECAUSE YOU GET INTO THE STORE AT THE TIME THE STORE CLOSES DOES NOT MEAN YOU CAN STAY PAST CLOSE. I don’t care if you’ve “made it” before the store closes, customers are supposed to be gone by the time the store closes, not just come in.

I promise, what I am telling you is usually right. I follow policy and so does the manager you just asked for. We aren’t giving you special treatment just because you think you deserve it. If your coupon does not work at our store, I am not overriding it so you can have a discount, that means I have to give that to everyone who asks for it then.

This joke isn’t funny. That’s all.

Is Name Brand Really Worth The Price?

When I was younger, I was a stickler on just buying name brand products. But let’s be honest, I am now a college student with less money. With less money, I can’t keep buying the more expensive items. I will explain how some items how the same as name brand and some you need to stick to the name brand.

Medicine is all the same. If you look at all active ingredients, they are the same. Name brand or not, painkillers and vitamins usually have the same ingredients. You are just paying for the name, but I promise if you ask the pharmacists, they will tell you how they are the same.

Cleaning products and detergent are usually the same. I will say some detergents are better than the off brand, but they all do the same thing, clean your clothes. There are so many cleaning products out there that all do the same job, but have different names. Just buy the cheapest one.

No Weekends Off

I know when we apply for a retail job, we also sign up for working weekends. That is the most busy time of the week because most people are off of work. But, working weekends makes us so tired. Most employees who work retail are full time students who work a lot more than they should. Weekends are times that we have no class and usually have events to go to, which we normally have to miss because of work.

I can’t tell you the amount of events and get-togethers I have had to miss since I started working retail. If it’s friends birthdays, sporting events, or anything that seems fun, I had to miss them. At most retail jobs, only the first three people who take off on weekends get those days off, everyone else is denied. The people who do have off will refuse to take your shift and then you are stuck at work for hours that day, usually in the middle of the day when the event is going on.

Let’s Have Some Uniformity

Working in retail, I found out a lot of people do not know how to fold clothes. Even employees struggle with folding clothes properly. I would say folding a shirt is pretty easy, but some struggle with this simple task.

When you are shopping, you should always try to refold the clothes you unfold. It does not have to be the perfect fold you see, but you not just throwing it back is a lot more helpful. Employees already have a hard time keeping up with cleaning on a busy weekend.

Now hear me out, we have been folding out clothes at home since we were kids, do you really not know how to do it in a store too? I am sure your draws in your house do not have clothes just thrown in there, so why would you do that somewhere else?

Let’s Talk: Customer Reviews

Almost every website has reviews on them, especially retail websites. When online shopping or even going to a new business, a review is the lifeline you look for. Reviews will make or break a business. One bad review can stop people from ever going to your business.

There are different types of reviews. I will talk about funny, good, and bad reviews.

Funny: BIC Pens For Her

This review is funny and on the good side, not directly saying anything bad about the company or product. This is a funny review because she states that she wasn’t allowed to use “manly pens” before, but now they have feminine pens, she can write with her delicate hands. The underlying meaning of this review is that pens and other products should not be limited to a certain gender if they are everyday items.

How Employees Feel on Black Friday

I previously wrote an blog about Black Friday shopping and why you should just do it online, but now I am here to tell you about how the retail workers feel during this season.

Be a little nicer to the retail workers who are working Thanksgiving night and during the day on Friday. Most of us had to skip family dinner because you all wanted to shop and all of our shifts are probably very long. This year my shift is 10p-5am Thanksgiving night. So yes, I get to have dinner with my family, but I am going to be extremely tired at work because I am working third shift hours when I am used to second shift. Shoppers don’t realize how long our shifts actually are and how much we would really rather not be there, but thousands of people will be there, so that means we also have to be there.

During this season, stores are hiring holiday help which also means we the normal employee’s hours are getting cut. This makes for some cranky employees. It happens at every store and it is a stressful time.

So again, just as a reminder, be nice to all employees on Black Friday because we will all be very tired and doing our best to make sure you get in and out very quickly.

Let’s Talk About A Raise

You only get pennies

I have talked about getting more money in a previous post, but let’s talk about how little money retail workers actually make. I know there is a minimum wage set for each state and in Wisconsin, where I live, it is $7.25. Now does that seem like a livable wage to you? I know most people who are paid this are teenagers with a very minimal amount of bills, but to people like me who had a lot of bills as a teenager, this is not enough.

I know there are yearly raises which sounds amazing, but wait! Do you know how little we get bumped up? Let’s say it’s no where near the amount that I work for. I worked at a company for almost three years and I could’t wait for my yearly raise, but it was a max of $0.50 and that’s on the high end of raises!!! I once received an $0.11 raise. This isn’t given for good work or if the manager likes you, it’s what the company gives everyone. Do companies really think these pennies they are giving us enough?

Black Friday Is Approaching Fast!!

Black Friday is a day of complete madness. You get the best deals, but what does that cause you? Some people are injured, you don’t sleep and you spend way more money than anticipated. Well, I am here to tell you everyone goes through this and there are easier ways.

Of course you want the best deals and most bang for you buck, but is it really worth staying out all night to do this? You have never ending checkout lines and even the longest lines just to get into the store. I would say the biggest places to shop would be Best Buy, Walmart, Target, and once upon a time, ToysRUs. You would drive by the day before and see people lined up with tents and other necessities to sleep overnight, usually in very cold weather just to save some money.

How To Cope With Work Stress

We have all felt very stressed at work. From a retail job to being a CEO, everyone has hard times at work. Working a retail job can take a lot out of you. You will feel the need to quit multiple times or even just call in and I am here to say that is okay.

Your mental health is very important. Being at work can make you way more stressed out than you need to be. From customers nagging you all the time, and managers on your case about something you didn’t do right or just that you have outside stress that makes it difficult for you to be at work, these are all very normal to feel.

I have had my fair moments of stress from work and life combining. I worked two job in college with a full course load and let me tell you, it takes a toll on you. You need to make sure you are making time for yourself. If you have a day off, don’t plan to do anything. Just plan to lay around and watch Netflix all day so you can destress. Call off of work if you have to. I know you will feel bad about leaving them short staffed, but your mental health is more important than someone being checked out at the register one minute faster.
