My name is Jordan Miller, I use he/him pronouns and have been a UC employee for 10 months now. I work as a Marketing Intern for Warhawk Dining. Warhawk Dining provides food-related services, catering and events to students across the college campus. To ensure students are kept up to date on changes to dining and feel a sense of community on campus, our marketing department uses multiple channels, including social media, multi-format posters and frames, and events like our Teaching Kitchens to drive multiple forms of engagement.

What does an average day look like working for the UC? What does your position entail?

On an average day, I will schedule social media content, including taking and editing photos using DSLR cameras and the Adobe Creative Cloud suite, manually copywriting descriptions using artificial intelligence tools for assistance, and finding the best time and place for the post using Sprout Social and Meta Business Suite. I also design, print, and place posters around our dining locations. One project I’m proud of, is my office poster design for our Registered Campus Dietitian, Summer Manzke. Originally, I had created a concept that I was not proud of, but through feedback I completely revised the poster and I think it turned out really great. Overall, this marketing role is very wide-spread in responsibilities, but the ultimate goal is to engage the community and make sure they are aware of what is happening, so all the tasks I complete revolve around this idea.

What does being a UC employee mean to you?

Being a UC employee means to me that I am creating sources of engagement within the campus community and providing resources for students to feel involved and excited to be here.

What are some of the most memorable days/moments working for the UC?

Some of the most memorable days working in the UC are when I get to table to promote different items on our agenda like feedback surveys, upcoming events, and free snacks/treats. The reason tabling is memorable is because I get to meet a lot of different people that I do and don’t know. Through tabling, I’ve run across different people I’ve met in clubs, working at the UC, etc. and have gotten to have fun conversations. If I weren’t tabling, I may not have run across some of these people again and gotten to know them better. This is where I feel marketing is the most engaging, because at the end of the day, we are marketing to people, and I am not just marketing to sell, but to genuinely engage with students.

Why should students visit the UC?

Students should visit the UC because it is the physical embodiment of a melting pot on our campus. It is the location where people come together to eat, study, promote their organizations, attend meetings, celebratory events, and much more.

How will your position at the UC help you in your future career?

My position at the UC will help me in my future career by solidifying my motivation toward a marketing-based role and building the needed skills to be successful in a full-time role of this sort.

How do you balance school, work, extracurricular activities, and a social life?

I balance school, work, extracurricular activities, and a social life by being communicative. I make my priorities clear by speaking them, and look for a sense of understanding as to why I believe certain responsibilities are important to me, and that if I am not able to balance one portion of my life for a period, I make it clear that it is not because I do not care, but that it has a sense of importance in my life and a greater future purpose. Balancing these areas of life is a constant juggle and sometimes things can get mismatched, but I hope that the consistent care toward balancing these segments is what people see when I interact with them.
