There have been many, MANY movies that have topped the charts at the Box Office over the years.  However, there are a few that stand out amongst others.  Here are the top rated movies by decade that are a definite must-see!

1960’s:

The Sound of Music made its original debut in 1965, surpassing Gone With the Wind as the top box office hit of all time!

1970’s:

The 70’s has brought quite a few chart topping movies to our collection. Rocky, Jaws, The Godfather are just a few to name.

One of the major players of this era was Star Wars, Episode IV: A New Hope in 1977This film is still today one of the most profitable and entertaining films of all time.  It has also climbed its way to one of the highest grossing films still to this day.

The 70’s also brought us Grease.  After its release in 1978, it stole the title of the top box office hit of all time from The Sound of Music.

1980’s:

Among many more Star Wars movie releases, the 1980’s also brought us movies such as Indiana Jones, E.T., and many more.

The original Batman was introduced to us in this decade in 1989 (The Michael Keaton one that is).  This series was later named one of the most profitable franchises of all time.

The Back to the Future trilogy was also brought to us in 1985.  The producers originally had no intent to create a sequel, but to their surprise, it became the highest grossing film of the year.

1990’s

Many movies came out in the 90’s, some include Home Alone, Men in Black, and Forrest Gump. This was also the period where we saw many animated movies come into the light.  The 90’s sparked the release of Toy Story, Aladdin, The Lion King, and Beauty and the Beast.

But let’s take a moment to highlight one of the main players in the film industry of all time.

Titanic came out in 1997 and has maintained its role of one of the top grossing films since. The three hour long tear jerking romance has hit a whopping $2.1 billion worldwide since its release (yes that’s billion with a B).

2000’s

The 2000’s brought many movies and series that we know, love, and still watch today.  The Harry Potter series was introduced, Pirates of the Caribbean, Shrek, Finding Nemo and Lord of the Rings.

The most talked about movie of the 2000’s was without a doubt, for some unbeknown reason to me, Avatar. This film surpassed movies mentioned previously on the box office sales level. Rumor has it, the sequel will hit theaters December of 2020.  Avatar raked in $2.7 billion from the box office while in theaters!

Long story short, if you haven’t seen any of these movies, you need to!
