Résumé help

OK, I know you’re all busy preparing for exams and finishing papers…but if you also are looking for work you may need to prepare a stunning & effective résumé.

Your University Library has some material that may help:
Search the Library Catalog for the keyword phrase “resumes employment” and you will get a list of titles that will give you advice on how to write résumés (some titles about cover letters and employment interviews also appear on the list).

Gallery of Best Resumes cover
Best Resumes coverMany of the recent titles are online as part of “NetLibrary”, e.g., Gallery of best résuḿes and Best résumés for college students and new grads. Click on a title and then on the “Linked Resources: Available through NetLibrary” link in the catalog record.

UWW Career Services provides résumé help, including online examples of different types of résumés and an online presentation on résumé basics. The staff at Career Services also review résumés for UWW students.

Good luck!

New Stuff Tuesday – May 6

Science Magazine

So apparently, I’ve been slacking on my responsibilities to the blog, namely New Stuff Tuesday. I missed the past two Tuesdays, and I hope to not repeat that. To make up for it, I have some really big news this week that I hope will make a lot of people happy.

We are excited to announce that we now have electronic access to Science Online, one of the most influential journals for the scientific community. The weekly publication from the American Association for the Advancement of Science (AAAS) contains cutting-edge research, global news and commentary to keep up-to-date. Articles in Science reach far beyond researchers. As Bob Benjamin, UWW professor of physics, says, “If you want your grandmother to know about what you’re up to, you publish in Science.” The subscription was made possible by using funds from the Library Fines & Fees account.

Cinco de Mayo

Cinco de Mayo celebration in Washington, D.C.

Cinco de Mayo (May 5th) is the anniversary of the 1862 Battle of Puebla, in which outnumbered Mexican troops defeated Napoleon III’s invading French army (despite this defeat the French weren’t actually stopped until 1867). The date is observed today by many in the U.S. and other countries as a celebration of pride in Mexican heritage.

UWW observance:
The Interested Ladies of Lambda Theta Alpha Latin Sorority will host UWW’s “First Annual Cinco de Mayo Celebration” May 5th, 2008, from 7-8 pm in the UC Summers Auditorium. The UWW community is invited to this opportunity to learn the importance of the events that took place on Cinco de Mayo, 1862 in Mexico. A pinata celebration will follow after the program outside the UC.

More information is available from the University Library:

Latino Holiday cover

Books include The Latino holiday book: from Cinco de Mayo to Dia de los Muertos– the celebrations and traditions of Hispanic-Americans (3rd-floor Main Collection, GT4803 .M45 2000) or The Oxford encyclopedia of Latinos & Latinas in the United States (2nd-floor Reference Collection E184 S75 O97 2005, v.1, pp.345-346). For the very serious, there are related books such as The French experience in Mexico, 1821-1861: a history of constant misunderstanding (3rd-floor Main Collection, DC59.8 .M6 B37).

Articles may be found in a variety of library databases, including Academic Search Premier. Here’s an example: “America’s growing observance of Cinco de Mayo” published in the Journal of American Culture (vol. 21, no. 2).

Economic Stimulus Payments

money imageWhen are you getting your economic stimulus payment? The IRS has published information about when and how you’ll get your payment.

You’re eligible for the payment if you have a valid Social Security Number, can’t be claimed as a dependent on a tax return and have either an income tax liability or “qualifying income” of at least $3,000. Most 2007 federal income tax return filers will qualify, but there’s a phase out for individuals with adjusted gross incomes (AGI) over $75,000 and married couples filing joint returns with AGI over $150,000.

If the IRS processed your return by April 15, and you use direct deposit, your payment should arrive on May 2, May 9 or May 16, depending on the last 2 digits of your social security number. If you do not use direct deposit, checks will be mailed between mid-May and mid-July. People who filed tax returns after April 15 will receive their payments about two weeks later than others. A return must be filed by October 15 in order to receive any stimulus payment this year.

For more information visit the IRS Economic Stimulus Payments Information Center online.

Joyce Huang, Library Director, retires

Today we reluctantly say farewell to Joyce Huang, Director of the University Library since 1995, and a member of the staff since 1985.

Joyce accomplished a great deal here, including creating the Bibliographic Instruction lab (most students have spent some time there for English 102, New Student Seminar, or other courses) and starting the Friends of the Library and the annual book sale. She and her husband, professor emeritus I-Ning Huang, participated in the host program for international students for many years. She has worked in many different capacities in the Library and also has served on numerous University committees such as the Chancellor’s Committee for Disability Concerns and the Faculty Senate. In 2006 she was honored as one of the Women in Leadership by the campus Women’s Issues Committee, and in 2008 she received the Lifetime Achievement Award from the Chancellor’s Committee for her dedication to accessibility. She’ll be sorely missed…

There is a congratulatory celebration in her honor from 2-4pm (Apr. 30) on the Library’s 3rd floor. Faculty, staff, and students who wish to join us to thank her for all she’s done and wish her well are welcome to join us.
