Philosopher’s Index – Database Trial

Philosopher's Index

We now have a trial of the online version of Philosopher’s Index (we currently subscribe to the print version). This product is produced by the Philosopher’s Information Center and is a current and comprehensive bibliographic database covering scholarly research in all major fields of philosophy.

The Philosopher’s Index features author-written abstracts covering scholarly research published in journals and books, including contributions to anthologies and book reviews. It contains research published since 1940 including nearly 570 journals from 43 countries with content representing a variety of languages.

Philosopher’s Index will help you as you research philosophical topics such as the nature of good and evil, why there is something rather than nothing, or the existence of God.

Don’t spread flu germs!

Welcome to fall semester, and flu season too. What a terrific combo! We’re all here on campus sharing keyboards and doorknobs and such, and we need to protect ourselves from germs that can make us sick. Of special concern is the H1N1 flu.

There are two simple steps we can take to protect ourselves and others:

Cover coughs and sneezes! Use a tissue (and throw it in the trash) or use your sleeve. Don’t use your hands!

Where to Wash Hands posterWash your hands! Wash long enough to sing “Happy Birthday” twice, or use alcohol-based hand cleansers:

  • after sneezing or coughing,
  • after using the bathroom,
  • before you eat,
  • before you touch your eyes, mouth, or nose.

More information is available from the web site of the Centers for Disease Control and the UWW University Health & Counseling Services.

September Feature: Wow – new databases

Using some shopping savvy, Andersen Library has added a number of new databases despite the shaky global economy and the Library’s flat budget.

EBSCO Databases

Back in the summer, Kyle blogged about the new EBSCO databases available through the Wisconsin Dept. of Public Instruction’s Badgerlink site. Not only do we have those 12 new databases, but we’ve added a few of our own. With the money we saved when Badgerlink picked up the tab for some databases we already paid for, we were able to add 8 additional databases:

eBooks

In addition to article databases, we also added more ebook collections. Last winter, we started a subscription to Literature Criticism Online. Then a deal with the CIC Consortium (Big Ten schools, plus U of Chicago) extended access to the archives of many of the Gale literature criticism series to the other UW campuses. This deal gave us more than $100,000 in literature criticism without cost to UW-W (thanks, UW Madison!). So try out some of these ebook subscriptions:

Publishing Opportunities

For those looking to publish articles in the fields of business and economics, the Cabell’s directories of publishing opportunities in Accounting, Economics & Finance, Management, and Marketing will help you find the best places to publish your work. The College of Business and Economics has picked up the tab for several of these directories.

New Stuff Tuesday – September 1

Inside the Mind of the Shopper

Inside the Mind of the Shopper:
The Science of Retailing
By Herb Sorensen
HF5429 .S5937 2009
New Book Island, 2nd floor

Shopping. Even in a recession, it’s sometimes impossible to pass up a good deal. Or when you go to the grocery store on an empty stomach – now that’s a dangerous idea. I always end up with way too much junk food and not enough of the good stuff. Although this week’s featured title doesn’t tackle the question of the eyes being bigger than your stomach and its impact on purchasing habits, it will make you look at your local supermarket in a whole new way.

Sorensen, widely recognized as the foremost retail consultant, offers scientific insights into the shopping experience with the purpose of improving sales for retailers. Using second-by-second analysis of consumer behavior, the author begins by boldly stating that eighty percent of shopper time is wasted. He then goes on to explain this assertion and others, like the influence of store layout on sales, the big box concept that might not always better, and the placement of products. It’s an eye-opening read that make you think the next time you head to the store.

Willie Works Hard!

If you’re a fan of the UW-Whitewater mascot, Willie Warhawk, you are going to love this video. In addition to being the campus mascot and attending athletic events, Willie likes to live the life of a typical college student. He spends time in the Andersen Library working on his homework, and then blows off steam. Check out this video below:

And you’re going to be at HawkFest today, so will we! Make sure you stop by!

Friday video (herding cats)

My blog posts usually promote Library events, services, & resources. But I saw this video on a blog about how to promote a reference chat service, and I simply could not resist sharing it! Maybe I can claim it’s relevant to the Library because we are constantly striving to get the word out to people about what we offer so that they make use of our resources and services, but I wouldn’t say that’s really like “herding cats” because people are pretty receptive when we talk to them. Well, in any case, enjoy.
