Conference on Managing Global Supply Chains

April 22nd, 2005     9:30-3:30 p.m. University of Wisconsin- Whitewater, WI

Hosted by the APICS student chapter at the University of Wisconsin – Whitewater in cooperation with the Milwaukee, South Central Wisconsin, Madison, Racine/Kenosha and Rock Valley APICS chapters

Objectives

Learn how to not only survive but thrive in the new competitive market.
Competition and opportunities in China.
How to venture venturing overseas.
Mastering culture, communications and international transport.
Reducing costs, retaining/increasing quality levels, adding innovation and shortening leadtimes.
What and where to outsource.

What you should get out of it?

This seminar is designed to be “hands on”.  1) You will assess the degree of competition your business will face from companies in the emerging markets. 2) You will learn about the types of functions/supplies which should be outsourced and whether this should be done in the US or overseas. 3) You will work on a global supply chain activity whereby the issues of international productivity, transportation cost/ leadtimes, material cost are all integrated. 4) Intercultural issues will also be explored – if you are having any specific communication difficulties in dealing with operations/suppliers overseas we can provide some recommendations. Given the intensive nature of the activities, the number of spaces available is limited. Please sign up as soon as possible to insure your spot.

Finally, by attending this seminar you will accrue 4 credits to maintain your APICS CPIM status.

Seminars

  1. Competition from emerging markets. Explore the potential threats and opportunities from newly industrializing countries – in particular China. Examine the expected competition and demand for your product for the next 5-10 years.
  2. Sourcing decisions. Decide whether to outsource and if so whether to do it domestically or internationally for your specific company needs.
  3. Managing the global transportation links. With the dramatic rise in goods being shipped internationally the freight rates and shipping times have increased dramatically. Explore various shipping options including inter-modal systems. Understand how corruption, strikes and poor infrastructure will distort shipping patterns.
  4. Managing cross cultural supply chains. Analyze cultural differences between US and managers in Europe, Asia and elsewhere. If you are having any communication difficulties with operations/suppliers overseas we can try to address them. Understanding and managing cultural differences is critical to ensure that competitive advantages accrued by going overseas are not lost.
