Optimist, Week 19

Uncategorized No Comments

Good Evening Optimists,

Here are some very brief updates:

We do not have a Club meeting this week.  The Board will meet this Wednesday (Feb. 15) from 5-6pm at Jessica’s.  Please let me know if you can not be there.  We have a couple of important items to discuss, including the requests for the City-Wide Rummage Sale and a proposal for help with the Gyro Stand.

Here are our speakers for upcoming meetings:

February 21–Brenda O’Beirne, Counselor Ed Dept. Award

February 28–Jeremy Lade & Christina Schwab, Wheelchair Basketball

March 7–Jan Bilgen, Campus Memory Garden

The Club clothing order is in.  Thank you to Jenny for organizing it so quickly.  Please make sure you get your money to Jenny or me.  Right now, I have the running list.

Lastly, it looks like we are going to have a beautiful day for the 4th Annual Optimist Trivia Night this Friday.  Thank you to all who are contributing to the efforts.  We are very pleased to have 30 teams signed up for the event.  If you are willing to help set up for the event or to volunteer a few hours during the evening, it’s not too late to sign up.  Please contact Lanora or me.

Thanks so much–ad see many of you soon,

Just Keep Smiling!

Kim and Angie 🙂

Greetings Optimists,

**This week’s meeting will be tomorrow, Tuesday, May 24, at 5:00 PM at Jessica’s Restaurant.   Our speaker will be Amy Edmonds, UW-W Athletic Director. Hope to see many of you there.**

A Call for 2016-17 Club Officers. It’s time to create the slate of officers for 2016-17. I have received word from two club members they would be willing/able to be on the board as an officer or general board member next year, depending upon what time of day the monthly board meetings are held. I also want to let everyone know that I WILL continue on the board as past-president and will be more than willing to assist with weekly emails, web site updates and Facebook postings.  So…what would YOU like to do next year to contribute? Perhaps one that you’ve not held  in the past? Please begin volunteering to be an officer for 2016-17. Contact me or Kim Adams if you’re willing to be an officer for next year. “Many hands make light work.”

We ended up with 47 applications and payments for the Rummage Sale this past weekend! Thanks to Jan Olson, Rick & Jeanine Fassl, Michele Filip, Josh Tepps, Hans Hahn and Carla Cheek for working on this project!

NFL “FUND CRAZR” RAFFLE TICKETS HAVE ARRIVED!! Twenty more tickets were picked up last week by club members for selling. If all club members sell 2 or 3 tickets the entire 100 tickets will be gone. By selling all 100 tickets, we’ll earn $1,200. I’m keeping a list, by ticket number, of who has picked up tickets to sell. I’ll bring the tickets with me to tomorrow night’s meeting. If you know you can sell tickets but can’t be at tomorrow’s meeting, let me know and I’ll set aside whatever number you want/need to sell. All sold ticket stubs and unsold tickets must be returned to the SWIS District before August 28.

Upcoming events needing helpers:

The next event is the Fishing Derby on Saturday, June 4. Al Hutchinson has volunteered to chair/organize the event. We’ll need press releases, prizes, 6-8 helpers for that morning, and maybe even grill masters for a simple hotdog cookout for the kids who show up.

Gyro Stand. Teshona Bennett and Duane Dickens have indicated they’ll help organize the Gyro Stand again. We’ll need someone with a truck-type vehicle and trailer hitch to volunteer to bring the trailer from Jim McLernon’s place to Whitewater for cleaning and setup the week before the event. We’ll also need helpers to deliver product each day to the stand from where ever we store the items once purchased.

Jefferson County Fair Ticket selling/taking. I’ll help Lou Zahn organize the ticket sellers for the Jefferson County Fair.

Our new club email account is: whitewater.optimist.club@gmail.com.

Don’t be surprised if you receive an email message with a link to a Google Calendar with the Club’s name. I’m creating a calendar for member use with upcoming events, speakers, project/event kickoff dates, etc.

Dates for upcoming club meetings and events include:

  • Tuesday, May 31 (5th Tuesday of the month). No meeting this day/week.

Optimist Club 2015-16, week of May 2, 2016

Greetings Optimists,

The 10 or so of us that gathered for the weekly meeting Tuesday evening, April 26, had lots of great discussions about many topics: City-wide rummage sale, Fishing Derby, Officers and Board members for 2016-17, recruiting new members, and a few other topics I can’t think of at the moment.

A Call for 2016-17 Club Officers. It’s time to create the slate of officers for 2016-17. After the City-wide Rummage Sale, the next event is the Fishing Derby on Saturday, June 4. We’ll need a chair/event organizer, press releases, prizes, 6-8 helpers for that morning, and maybe even grill masters for a simple hotdog cookout for the kids who show up.

2016 Whitewater City-wide Rummage Sale

Uncategorized No Comments

The University of Wisconsin-Whitewater/Community Optimist Club, will be hosting their final City-Wide Rummage Sale on Saturday, May 21, 2016. Registrations are now being accepted. All proceeds from this event help fund activities to support youth programs throughout the year. Last year saw more than 40 families benefit by having their rummage sale on the same day. More sales draw more people and that means more items you don’t have to store anymore!

The cost to participants will be $10 per household, which guarantees each seller a spot on the master rummage sale list, a sign for their yard, and a brief, 10-word description of the most attractive items available for sale. This is a community service project offered by the UW-W/Community Optimist Club and we appreciate persons registering with us, as the very reasonable registration fee gives them better publicity at a cost savings over running a separate ad. Funds raised cover the costs for the project and any money in excess of costs goes to fund other youth service projects throughout the year.

You may register for the event using either:

  1. The “2016 City-wide Rummage Sale Online Application” and submitting the $10 payment via PayPal. You do not have to have a PayPal account to use this option.
  2. Or use the “2016 City-wide Rummage Sale paper Application.” Complete the paper form and return with the $10.00 check to: J. Olson, 651 Darcy Lane, Whitewater, WI 53190 no later than May 13.

You can also pick up a registration form at the Irving L. Young Library; the Sweet Spot Coffee Shop, 226 W. Whitewater St; the Sweet Spot Coffee Shoppe and Bakehouse, 1185 W. Main; and Eastsider and Westsider Citgo Stations.

Persons who wish to extend their sale either by starting on Thursday, May 19 and/or through Sunday, May 22nd, should indicate that on their registration form. There is no additional fee and the extra days are “on your own.” Two and three-day sales will be highlighted on the locator list with an asterisk.

The final deadline for rummage sale registration is May 13. This guarantees participants a spot on the rummage sale list. Those lists will be available for pick up at the businesses listed above beginning May 19, as well as at the Sweet Spot Coffee Shoppe, 226 Whitewater Street on May 21ST from 7-11am until the lists are gone.

For further information or questions, phone 262-473-2437 between the hours of 2pm to 9pm.
