On February 27th, UET Director Ray Stanek gave notice that he will be leaving ICIT. His last day will be Friday, March 6th. During his nearly two year tenure with UW-Whitewater, Ray helped lead the campus’s transition to Windows 7, which involved making updates to several thousand machines. He also played a critical role in developing a campus-wide strategy for making AV upgrades by providing direction and leadership during the process. ICIT wishes Ray – and his Chicago Cubs – the best of luck on their future endeavors.
Unified Desktop Management Progressing Through Phase I
The Unified Desktop project is in the middle of Phase I, due for completion at the end of February or early March. The Directory Services integration component, which is the dependency for the remaining tasks in Phase I, is nearing completion for both the Windows and MacOS platforms. The subsequent tasks require the development of strategies for imaging, application distribution, user permissions, asset management and personal data storage. A contractual agreement with Apple for Mac OS licensing is also under negotiation.

Unified Desktop Management
This spring, a planning group of iCIT support staff was formed to evaluate the processes used to manage campus lab and office desktops. Two goals were stated: find a way to eliminate duplication of effort between the two support areas, and recommend processes that will enable iCIT to deliver a consistent desktop configuration.
One of the recommendations of the planning group is to consolidate the automated desktop administration tasks for labs and offices into the responsibility of a single person in iCIT. iCIT management received proposals for this position, and is currently evaluating them in light of the goals and needs of the project.
