Sara Deschner joins iCIT as Assistant Director of Instructional Facilities

Sara Deschner, an IT instructor in the College of Business and Economics, has joined iCIT as Assistant Director of Instructional Facilities.  Sara has been working in iCIT this summer on an interim basis managing the General Access labs and instructional facilities summer projects. 

Prior to UW-Whitewater, Sara worked as an IT manager at Pentair, Inc. (formerly Sta-Rite Industries), where she provided strategic and technical direction to operations, LAN/WAN and Web groups.   Since joining UW-Whitewater as a lecturer in 2006, she also has worked for iCIT during summers and during the academic year on special projects related to labs and technology infrastructure. 

As Assistant Director of Instructional Facilities, Sara will be responsible for state-of-the-art design, engineering and daily operation of teaching and learning facilities at UW-Whitewater.   Her primary responsibilities will include coordinating classroom facilities design and department computer lab technology deployment, as well as planning and management of the GA computing labs.  Sara will supervise the GA student lab manager, and will manage staff who support the A/V of high-tech classrooms and computing labs.  She will report to Elena Pokot, CIO.

In addition to these responsibilities, Sara is leading the second phase of the desktop virtualization project, to make lab software readily accessible to students outside of lab facilities.  Sara will continue to teach her Learning Community, Technically Speaking, this year, and will continue to support the CyberGirlz camp as needed during her transition.

Ray Stanek to leave iCIT

Ray Stanek has announced he will be leaving iCIT to pursue another career opportunity in the private sector.  During his short time in our department, Ray helped several ImageNow project goals progress favorably, and his contributions are appreciated.  Ray’s last day is today, Friday, July 22.  We wish him the best of luck in his future endeavors.

Tom Paull, NOC technician, announces retirement

Tom Paull, Network Operations Center technician, has announced his retirement at the end of this month.  His last day will be Thursday, June 30. 

Tom started his career with the State Civil Service at UW-Madison in 1980.  He has been employed at the UW-Whitewater campus since July 11, 1988 when he transferred from UW-Madison.  Since then, he has continuously worked in numerous capacities in iCIT and its forerunners TIR and Computer Center.  Tom has made many contributions to the smooth operation of the department and its services, most recently by assisting with various A/V and cabling projects in addition to his Operations and Test Scoring duties.  Tom plans to remain active in Whitewater and the campus community.    

Please stop by L2005 on Thursday, June 30 from 1 -2 p.m. to wish Tom a happy retirement.   We thank Tom for his service, and wish him the best in the future!

Barry Henrichs leaving iCIT to pursue graduate study

Barry Henrichs, Web Team Coordinator, will be leaving iCIT at the end of July to pursue graduate study in communication at Marquette University. 

Barry joined iCIT in 2004 as a Web Applications Developer.  In 2007, he left his position for six months to volunteer in New Orleans, and then returned to work on special projects and strategic planning.   Barry has made numerous contributions to iCIT.  Most recently as Web Team Coordinator, he aided the Web Team in completing several major projects including  the rollout of the Ingeniux Content Management System, and the elimination of the last ColdFusion applications.  

Upon Mary Jo deMeza’s retirement at the end of this week, the members of the Web Team will report to Kent Steinike.  Over the next month, Barry will transition the day-to-day management of the team to Kent.  Long-term, the reporting structure of the Web Team will depend on the resolution of other staff searches and transitions currently in progress.

Sara Deschner joins iCIT as lab and instructional facilities manager for summer 2011

Sara Deschner, an IT instructor in the College of Business and Economics, has joined iCIT for summer 2011, taking interim responsibility for managing the General Access labs and instructional facilities summer projects.

For the past three years, Sara has worked for iCIT during summers and during the academic year on special projects related to labs and technology infrastructure.  In her expanded role this summer, she serves as the primary contact person for General Access lab operations, and supervises the student lab manager.  In addition, she provides oversight to the AV staff to monitor the progress of the lab and classroom summer projects, and will report status to iCIT management.  Sara also is leading the second phase of the desktop virtualization project, to make lab software readily accessible to students outside of lab facilities. 

Sara is working with Mary Jo deMeza  to transition responsibilities before Mary Jo’s retirement date at the end of June.   Her office space is in McGraw 13.  Please join us in welcoming Sara to the iCIT team for summer 2011!
