Fall semester can get busy fast. Between adjusting to a new schedule, meeting new people, joining clubs, and keeping up with classes, it’s easy to let the season pass without truly enjoying it. For some students, the pressure of balancing everything can become overwhelming, leaving little time or energy to enjoy life outside of academics. However, taking time for yourself doesn’t mean you’re being unproductive. Small moments of joy can help you recharge, reduce stress, and return to your responsibilities feeling more motivated.
As a senior facing my busiest semester yet, I want to make the most of every moment while I still can. If there’s one thing I’ve learned throughout college, it’s that you don’t have to choose between enjoying fall and succeeding academically. The key is finding simple ways to romanticize even the busiest days. Here’s how you can embrace the season without falling behind!
- Create a Realistic Schedule for the Semester
I will always recommend using a planner, whether it’s digital or physical. I personally use both, and one way I make planning more enjoyable is by customizing my digital planner for the season. Notion is a great tool that I’ve used for years because it makes it easy to organize your responsibilities and personalize your pages. Each season, I update my planner with new colors, pictures, and GIFs that make me feel more excited about the months ahead. It’s a simple way to turn planning into something fun, rather than another chore.
While organizing your schedule, be realistic about how much you can handle. It can be tempting to say yes to every club, event, and opportunity, but overbooking yourself can quickly lead to stress and burnout. As a senior, I’ve experienced this plenty of times, and I’ve learned that protecting your time is just as important as being involved. Leave room in your schedule to rest, recharge, and enjoy the season!
- Attend Campus Events
Getting involved on campus is one of the best ways to make the fall semester feel special. I always look forward to sporting events, especially football games, because they bring students together, mark the beginning of sweater weather, and give me a chance to step away from schoolwork and have fun. Campus events can also help you meet new people, try something different, and create memories outside the classroom. Whether you attend a club activity, a UC event, a game, or another campus program, setting aside time for these experiences can make your semester feel more balanced and memorable. I recommend checking the UW-Whitewater event calendar and Connect2 regularly so you don’t miss something that you might enjoy!

- Fall Movie Nights
This is my personal favorite because I love movies! A fall movie night can be the perfect way to unwind after a productive study session. Make studying feel more enjoyable by putting on a cozy outfit, grabbing your favorite seasonal drink or snack, and inviting friends to work together. You can even set a goal, such as finishing an assignment or studying for a certain amount of time, before watching a fall movie as your reward. This gives you something fun to look forward to while helping you stay on track academically. Whether you choose a comforting classic, a Halloween movie, or a new release, combining studying with a movie night can turn an ordinary evening into a cozy fall memory.
- Participate in Fall Activities
One of the easiest ways to romanticize fall is by making time for seasonal activities! I love getting into the fall spirit by visiting apple orchards and pumpkin patches with friends. You can also paint pumpkins, make a fall craft, bake a seasonal treat, or go for a walk to enjoy the changing leaves. These activities don’t have to be expensive or take up an entire day either! Even grabbing a warm drink and taking the scenic route to class can make an ordinary day feel a little more special. Planning small moments to enjoy the season gives you something to look forward to, helps you recharge, and creates memories further than the classroom.
What better time to start romanticizing your college life than right now? As we enter the “brr” months, let the changing season inspire you to be creative, try new things, and appreciate the little moments. Remember, enjoying fall doesn’t mean falling behind. With a realistic schedule and a little balance, you can stay focused on your goals while still making meaningful memories. So grab your favorite fall drink, plan something fun, and make the most of the season!
