For many college students, summer means working, taking on internships, summer classes, traveling, or simply just relaxing before the next semester begins. If you’re a college student on a budget (like me!), don’t worry because having fun doesn’t have to mean spending all your money. Whether you’re staying in Whitewater, heading home for the summer, or looking for ways to enjoy the warm weather with friends, there are plenty of affordable activities to keep you busy. In this blog, I’ll share some of my favorite budget-friendly activities that are fun, and great for making the most of your break without breaking the bank!
- Keep a Summer Scrapbook
If you’re looking for a creative activity to keep you off your phone this summer, you might enjoy scrapbooking. It’s a fun way to stay inspired to try new experiences and make the most of your summer. The best part is that you can find affordable supplies just about anywhere or even use items you already have at home, making it a low-effort activity to enjoy on a budget.
- Make Homemade Popsicles
Bored on a hot day? Cool off by making popsicles at home! You can try different flavors and combinations, making it fun to enjoy a delicious treat that’s perfect to try in this hot weather. You can check out some simple, affordable recipes here.
- Have a Thrifting Day
Whether going solo or with friends, thrifting has always been a favorite activity of mine. Not only is it budget friendly, you never know what you can find at a thrift store. It’s a perfect way to refresh your wardrobe or decorate your space without spending a lot of money this summer.
- Have a Picnic With Friends
If you’re looking to spend more time outdoors this summer, try planning a picnic with your friends. It’s a great way to enjoy the warm weather while making lasting memories together. You can even get creative by making it a themed picnic, like having everyone bring a different colored food to create a rainbow spread. Bring along books, board games, or a deck of cards for even more fun!
- Go Berry Picking
This is another fun activity to enjoy with friends, family, or even on your own! Many berry farms charge by the pound, making it an affordable way to get outside and enjoy the summer. Plus, you’ll get to take home fresh, delicious berries to snack on or use in your favorite recipes, and it’s perfect for taking fun photos! - Decorate Flower Pots and Grow Plants or Flowers
Looking for another fun and creative way to spend an afternoon? You could try decorating flower pots and planting your favorite flowers or plants! This is an activity I’m trying out myself this summer, and I have found fun inspiration on Pinterest. Once you’ve finished decorating your pot, you can plant flowers, herbs, or even a small houseplant and enjoy watching it grow throughout the summer.
- Read a Book Outside
If you’re looking for another low-effort affordable activity this summer, find a new book at a local library or bookshop and head outside! Whether you read at a beach, park, or just your backyard, reading outdoors is a great way to enjoy the warm weather while taking a break from screens. It’s the perfect opportunity to slow down, relax, and take in the sunshine.
Summer doesn’t always have to be expensive to be memorable. Whether you’re getting creative, spending time outdoors, or making memories with friends, there are many ways to enjoy the season without spending a lot of money. I hope these ideas inspire you to try something new and make the most of your summer break!
