1) Accessibility is easy to come by as we are the #1 ranked UW school for accessibility.
The Center for Students with Disabilities (CSD) is a huge part of that. As part of their mission, “CSD actively collaborates with students, faculty, and staff to create an inclusive, accessible university experience. CSD is dedicated to promoting diversity and an equal opportunity for students to fully participate in all aspects of their education and university life.
2) The stress of paying for textbooks is non-existent.
The University of Wisconsin-Whitewater is the proud home of one of the largest textbook rental programs in the state. Undergraduate students pay a textbook rental fee in their tuition every semester. This fee allows all undergraduate students to rent the majority of their required textbooks for no additional cost.
3) Hearing a cannon go off on football game days is super casual.
At every home-game here in Whitewater, there is this little known celebrity, the cannon guy. For over 20 years, Mike Lesko has punctuated Warhawk football touchdowns by shooting his Civil War replica cannon every time a Warhawk reaches the end-zone.
4) Not to mention having a purple road leading directly to Perkins Stadium!
Every fall, Warhawk Dr. is re-painted purple by all of the incoming freshman and transfer students.
5) Walking to class is like walking through a garden.
Everywhere you walk on campus, the grounds have been landscaped by our superior grounds crew and every angle is perfect for those last minute Instagram posts.
6) It’s totally normal to hear Whitewater won another championship.
UW-Whitewater is the only school in NCAA history to complete a major sport national championship trifecta in the same year! Receiving national championship awards in Basketball, Baseball, and Football in the same year (2014) is quite the hoot here in the dub!
7) You jingle and shake your keys at football games
At the kick-off, everyone pulls out their keys and shakes them simultaneously. Not many people know why or how it got started, but it’s tradition!
8) Seeing Willie the Warhawk while walking to class is as casual as seeing Big Bird on Sesame Street.
Willie is very engaged on campus and is always there to help bring out school pride with students.
9) Walking to class sometimes seems like a cold and snowy expedition.
Wisconsin winters are brutal, but when class hasn’t been cancelled, you will find yourself trenching through the snow and trying to make it in time incase your professor decides to take attendance.
10) Everyone on campus is proud to be a Warhawk.
Whether it be shaking our keys at Warhawk football games, or getting pumped up during homecoming week, we are all here for a reason and we are proud to call Whitewater our home.
A big THANK YOU to Craig Schreiner for letting us use some of his amazing photographs in this blog!
