My name is Caitlyn Dickman, and I’m currently a junior at the University of Wisconsin–Whitewater. I’m pursuing a major in Entrepreneurship, along with a Minor in Musical Theatre and a Certificate in Music Business. A unique combination that perfectly reflects my passion for both the creative and business sides of the arts.
I’m originally from Janesville, Wisconsin, and I’ve been actively involved in the local theatre community for years. Whether I’m performing, directing, or supporting behind the scenes, theatre has always been a huge part of my life and identity.
On campus, you’ll often find me at Roberta’s Art Gallery, where I work as the Public Relations Lead. But outside of just working at Roberta’s, you can find me exploring the latest exhibit or simply soaking in inspiration. When I’m not there, chances are I’m at a nearby theatre, either preparing for a show or diving into a new creative project.
Looking ahead, my dream is to work in the arts industry where I can merge my love for creativity with my entrepreneurial drive. I’m passionate about creating meaningful, engaging experiences through the arts, and I cannot wait to see where this journey takes me!
Tell us a little bit about your department.
At Roberta’s Art Gallery, we collaborate with both on-campus organizations and students, as well as community artists and members. We showcase exhibits of many media and themes that are both educational and exciting for everyone! As well as the exhibits themselves, we also host receptions and events with free refreshments and snacks, and have knowledgeable talks with the artists to provide background to their work and lifestyle. Whether you enjoy art or not, Roberta’s is a great place to get involved and even study in a creative and aesthetic atmosphere.
What does an average day look like working for the UC? What does your position entail?
An average day working at the art gallery entails greeting guests and answering questions about the exhibit. When a new exhibit is about to open, I assist with measuring and displaying the artwork properly as a team with the other gallery employees. When the exhibit is about to close, I work with the team to take down the projects and package them safely to be transported to their next destination.
As the PR Lead, I communicate with the artists about their goals and vision for the exhibition, as well as attend meetings to bring these ideas to life! I also design and coordinate marketing for the gallery, whether it’s signage, posters, or content on our Instagram page @uww_rag.
Why should students visit the UC?
The UC is at the center of campus and hosts lots of clubs and activities. It’s a great study spot to get your work done, but it can also provide a great break from the daily struggles and stressors of being a student. I personally have made lots of friends by attending the events within the UC, hosted by the many departments here, and going to efficient study sessions in the UC concourse.
Go bowl at the bowling alley, attend a UC Live event, or check out the latest artwork at the gallery; you won’t want to miss the fun here at the heart of campus!
How will your position at the UC help you in your future career?
As someone wanting to get into the arts industry, the best advice I have been given is to gain as much experience in your desired field as you can. Previously, I have worked in entertainment, retail, food, and education, which gave me great skills to enter the workforce. But I wanted to find a position that combined both my entrepreneurial spirit and creative talents and was actively involved in the growing arts scene. By being the PR lead, I do just that! I network with successful artists, gain insight into the business of the arts, and enhance my skillset to be knowledgeable post-grad in the industry.
Explain a little about the connections you have made working in the UC.
At the UC, I have made connections with other artists and performers and learned about their journeys to success. The insight has helped build my confidence in what I am passionate about and given me a path to move forward with my career. I even got to be a part of the process of bringing their creative visions to life, which is a very rare opportunity.
Most importantly, I have met other like-minded and hardworking students who all work together and collaborate to make the space a welcoming and inclusive environment for everyone. The most valuable skills I have learned are from my peers, and the memories I have made along the way will last a lifetime!
How do you balance school, work, extracurricular activities, and a social life?
I am a very detailed person, and I like to use a thorough schedule to plan my schoolwork and work. I make sure to include time for friends and family, as well as time for myself to relax and breathe. Being a student is a full-time job by itself, so it is very important to do self-care, so you do not reach burnout. To do this, I like to create music, draw, paint, and cuddle my cat to reset myself for the day ahead.
