By now you may have heard that the UC is hiring! When considering application, it is important to know that working for the University Center is not just your typical job. There are endless opportunities and ways to get involved to make your experience even more beneficial. Here’s our top four:
1. First off, the UC has an initiative called the T.R.A.C.K. program, which stands for training, relationships, advising, connections, and knowledge. This program is offered to all UC employees and you can attend a range of different events including everything from customer service training to cupcake decorating workshops! Another recent opportunity that has been offered is one that is open to all UW-Whitewater student employees. Career & Leadership Development is now offering a Student Employee Professional Development Series with different training sessions on topics including customer service, interpersonal communication, safety on the job, and others
Some that we’ve been to:
–TRACK Budgeting Event: In this session we learned so many useful tips such as creating a spending plan, information about our student loans, ways to save money, tips about building our credit history, and so much more that we will be able to use throughout our lives!
–Customer Service Training Session: This session gave tips about customer service and talked about the importance of customer satisfaction, knowing what your customers want, being a good listener as an employee, the importance of making customers feel important and appreciated, and more.
–TRACK Tech Tips: This session helped us by showing us ways of using technology to get organized and how to use it to be efficient. We covered different types of tools such as OneNote, Outlook, and GoogleDive that can be helpful for planning meetings and sharing documents. We also talked about various phone applications that can be useful such as Mint, GasBuddy, and Google Maps.
–TRACK Etiquette Dinner: At the etiquette dinner, not only did we get a delicious meal but we also learned valuable lessons about proper dining for lunch or dinner interviews. We learned that it is important to take small bites and to not start eating until the head of your table has. It is important to know proper etiquette in order to impress that future employer you may be dining with.
All of these different events and sessions not only benefit us as employees, but they help us personally and as we develop professionally throughout our college experience. Some upcoming T.R.A.C.K and Professional Development events include cupcake decorating, an earth day event, safety on the job, cross cultural communication, and interpersonal communication.
2. Committees/Conferences:
In addition to different events that you can go to as a UC student employee, there are also different committees you can join and conferences you can attend. Being part of a committee is a great resume builder and helps enhance your skills in that particular area: m
–Student Marketing Committee: This is an awesome committee of UC student employees from different departments where you get to work on all different kinds of marketing related projects for the UC, and the students on the committee are also the authors of this UC Blog!
–Association for College Unions International (ACUI) Conferences: ACUI has regional and international conferences each school year that any UC student worker can apply to go to. You get to see different keynote speakers, network with students and professionals from other college unions, and learn from educational sessions about many different topics ranging from customer service, leadership, communication, and so much more!
Other conferences that you can attend as a UC student employee include NACA which involves finding events for the following school year. Also, the UC is newly working towards including students on committees for events such as the End of Semester Reception, Summer on the Mall, and more!
3. The Positions Themselves: No matter what position you are in as a student employee you gain valuable skills that you can take with you as you transition from college into your early career. You learn about how to communicate and interact with others, problem-solving skills, and also time management skills. Not only do you get to develop yourself as a worker but you also get to develop relationships.
4. The People: When working on the job, you are able to make connections with co-workers, supervisors and other UC student employees across different departments. Supervisors and student managers in all departments serve as great mentors and are always there to help their fellow employees. Co-workers can also become lifelong friends.
All in all, the James R Connor University Center is a wonderful place to work that offers many professional and personal opportunities to develop yourself and make the most out of your time here at UW- Whitewater.
