Scholarly/Peer-Reviewed Sources

Have you been told by your professor to use scholarly or peer-reviewed articles for your research paper? Wondering what that means and how to get them?

Peer-reviewed (or refereed) journals send submitted manuscripts to other experts in the same discipline so that they can assess the quality of the potential article before it’s accepted for publication.

Many article databases offer a check box that limits results to scholarly/peer-reviewed publications. However, the results may include book reviews, etc., that you would not want even though they were published in scholarly journals.screenshot from article database showing peer review limit box

Look for the characteristics of a scholarly article, which are listed on the Library’s guide “Scholarly Journal vs. Popular Magazine Articles.” There’s a YouTube video from another library called “Magazines vs. Scholarly Journals” to view:

You also can look up a publication’s title in UlrichsWeb, which describes journals, magazines, etc.screenshot from Ulrichsweb database showing peer review info about a journal

If in doubt, ask a librarian for help!

Shoptimism:
Why the American Consumer Will
Keep On Buying No Matter What
by Lee Eisenberg
HF5415.33 .U6 E47 2009
New Book Island, 2nd floor

In these pressing economic times, common sense would tell us that we should save every penny possible, to become more frugal and to evaluate each expenditure with increased scrutiny. On the other hand, can one easily resist the urge to purchase ‘must needed’ items? For example, I couldn’t help myself when I went to the outlet mall last week and dropped more money than I care to admit (the deals were amazing!). Fortunately, this week’s featured title might just have an explanation.

Eisenberg, accomplished editor and visiting scholar at the University of Pennsylvania, explores the wonderful world of shopping, both from the selling angle – the marketers, advertisers and retailers – and the buying angle – the consumers. He explains the business forces that work for or against us (depending on your perspective) to buy and buy again. The author also delves into the debate about how and why we, as consumers, hand over the dollar bills or credit cards to willing cashiers – is it the act of buying, or what the new found purchases represent? If you have any interest in retail therapy (or need help with understanding it), this book is for you.

Makeover TV

Makeover TV:
Selfhood, Citizenship and Celebrity
by Brenda Weber
PN1992.8 .R43 W43 2009
New Book Island, 2nd floor

Reality television, once thought of as a passing fad, has turned out to take over to profile every aspect of daily life. If it can be filmed, then it will be made (think fist pumpers of Jersey Shore – really, MTV?). The trend extends to makeovers as well, everything from home renovations to body transformations. I admit that I have lost many hours of my life glued to the TV, stuck on House Hunters or What Not to Wear marathons. But what does that say about us, our way of life, our society?

Weber, professor of gender studies at Indiana University, takes on the phenomenon of televised makeovers and analyzes how these shows represent much larger cultural ideas. She watched over 2,500 hours of the genre (I want her job!) to come up with these narratives about the ‘rebirth’ of individuals to a national audience. The author contends that the makeover experts exert their influence on participants, emphasizing the distinct differences between males and females. This hyper-‘genderization’ speaks volumes about our current society and what makeovers do to a person’s self-identity.

First Floor Shelving Move

You may want to bring along your headphones if you are planning on studying or working on the first floor in the coming weeks. FP&M is currently in the midst of updating the Periodicals shelves with newer ones from the second floor. You may hear some clanging and banging at times.

Also, as shelves need to be taken down, we will be temporarily relocating some bound journal titles from the first half of the alphabet. If you are having trouble locating any items, please stop at the Periodicals information desk for help.

Thank you for your patience!

Test & improve financial literacy

How’s your financial IQ? According to the executive summary of the FINRA Investor Education Foundation‘s 2009 report “Financial Capability in the United States,” respondents to a national survey demonstrated a low level of financial literacy. Here are couple of places to test yours:

 • Take the Council for Economic Education’s 20-item economic literacy test.
 • Take the 5-item portion of the FINRA survey related to financial literacy, on pages 28-29 (items M6-M10) of the survey questionnaire.

cover of WI Planning Curriculum in Personal Financial LiteracyYou can search HALCat (Andersen Library’s online catalog) for materials about personal finance, investments, or financial literacy. Some titles are intended to guide and educate you, such as The road to wealth: A comprehensive guide to your money (2nd-floor Browsing Books, HG179 .O758 2008). Others are about better educating our children, such as Financial literacy education: What do students need to know to plan for the future?: Hearing before the Subcommittee on Education Reform of the Committee on Education and the Workforce, U.S. House of Representatives (online or in print in the 2nd-floor Federal Documents collection, Y 4.ED 8/1:108-39) and Planning curriculum in personal financial literacy (2nd-floor Wisconsin Documents collection, ED 6/2:C 87/P 47/2009). The latter title is intended to help Wisconsin teachers implement the state’s standards for students’ personal financial literacy.

Search article databases for information also, and find articles such as “Integrating Personal Finance Concepts into the Financial Accounting Course” (Business Education Forum, Oct. 2009, vol. 64:no. 1, pp. 17-22 — available in the 1st-floor Periodicals Collection) and the Sept. 4, 2009 issue of CQ Researcher on “Financial Literacy” (which includes a discussion of whether courses that cover personal finance should be mandatory in schools).

There also are a number of web sites for improving your financial knowledge. Here are just a few:

Please ask a librarian for assistance with finding materials.
