What Net Services Are Doing With Our Data

Last week I discussed some of the potential hurdles the internet is currently facing. However, I was writing that piece, a revelation occurred to me: What do people actually use all their data on right here and now? Today, with the help Kimberlee Morrison of SocialTimes and her article “Internet Users Want to Know How Their Data Is Used,” I think have a pretty good idea. First thing to keep in mind this in, that the data represents people who have/use password-protected login required accounts. Second, this has as much to do with password security as it does the most commonly used services on the web. In a world where many are concerned about how their personal data is used by these internet corporations, the numbers of how this information treated is staggering.

75 % of consumers are frustrated with their passwords and 58% of consumers are driven away by the prospect of adding another to their que. Yet from quarter 1 to quarter 2 earlier this year logins, the things require passwords, still increased across 4 major platforms including Facebook and Google. However, the real reason people are concerned is privacy and how just about every website markets to us, but having personal information allows journalists/advertisers to go one step further. In a world where 90% of consumers fear for the privacy of the data, and the hacking of systems that seems to occur on a weekly basis it is understandable to worry.

However, in spite of the panic both the consumer and the corporation seem to be taking the next step for the safest, most informative/profitable formula possible. 66% of users have comment in their belief/willingness to try bio-metrics (ex. fingerprint scanning) and even those not on board with the process understand like the majority users that logins and passwords are vital to a safe experience. The targeted marketing from the dozens or so sites you have logins for can be annoying, but the alternative is unthinkable. Finally, if this and dealing occasionally clunky websites (depending on what you’re like for) to get your news and social feedback is to much for you there is always the newspaper or sitting your butt down with the person you want to chat with face to face.

  1. The person who can figure out a solution to passwords that is easier for the user and more secure will retire very rich, and I would be happy to contribute to his or her retirement. This is a problem that seems like it should be solvable.
