More than a Game

College is expensive, there’s no denying that. Student debt is a rising issue in this country and for collegiate athletes the physical toll they must endure in a season along with classwork, balancing a social life, etc. can make for a very demanding and stressful college experience. You have to be a special kind of athlete to be awarded a full-ride scholarship to a Division 1 college. For a walk-on athlete, it’s an even different kind of situation. These athletes are not recruited before enrolling into school and are not awarded any athletic based scholarship.

For me, these two videos highlight arguably one of the best moments in sports, moments that don’t occur on the field but off it. Several athletes in these videos are sitting down in team meetings or a meeting they think is usual practice routine and that makes the moment even more special as the surprised look on their faces and their teammates who were in on the surprise join in on the celebration. It’s a heartwarming moment that highlights the special bond that teammates have with each other and with their coaches. School and sports are never easy, but it’s moments like these that make it worth it. Feels time!
