Necro Lore

ESO posted a small article about the history of Necromancy throughout Tamriel. They also explain how necromancy works. Necromancers have the power to manipulate the animus, or the soul, of a living or previously living thing. “The Mages Guild identifies necromancy as its own distinct school of magic, but some Necromancers say it’s just an offshoot of mysticism, conjuration, and enchantment—no more dangerous than fireballs and scrying spells.”-ESO. While in the academic standing of magic as a norm, Necromancy stands out as it manipulates the soul directly. Majority of cultures see this manipulation of the soul as a crime against nature and as inherently evil. The power to manipulate or modify the soul is a affront to all living things, is sacrilegious, and an insult to the dead who gave life their all. The Mages Guild reject Necromancy on ethical grounds, since it involves messing with, and or modifying, mortal souls. Since it is frowned upon by most of society, if you play as a necromancer and use certain skills that only necromancer can learn, you will be reported to the in game authorities and receive a bounty. “We felt it was important to intertwine necromancy and Justice for much the same reason we put Justice in the game in the first place,” says Ed Stark, the team’s Lead Content Designer in charge of the Necromancer class and the Justice system. “Historically, necromancy has always been frowned-upon by Tamrielic society, and so, when some NPCs see an overtly necromantic act, they react with fear or aggression and report it for the crime it is.”- ESO.
