Week 6 – (another look at) The Commuter

The Commuter (on tap) by One Barrel Brewing Co      Although this has already been featured on my blog as a “Beer of the Week,” I have decided to write about it again, but this time I drank the beer off tap in a restaurant/bar. I want to talk a bit about how this beer, although it is the same as out of the bottle, can be a very different drinking experience from buying a six pack and cracking a bottle.      From my time on a brewery tour, I have learned that beer is brewed slightly differently when it goes into a keg than from when it goes straight into the bottle. This gives the consumer a slightly different experience while drinking the beer. I have always loved One Barrel’s beer, but something about The Commuter just has to be from tap. Beer for the Backyard

As the holidays near, I can’t help but reminisce about how much I really, really miss summer. Fewer responsibilities, long nights and warm, sunny days. So for you beer and summer lovers, here are my top three brews to sip on in your backyard: 1. Miller Lite by Miller Brewing Company 2. Spotted Cow by New Glarus Brewing Company 3. Summer Shandy by Leinenkugels Who knows, maybe Wisconsin will be generous and give us a summer day in the middle of...

Guest Beer Critic – Audrey

Guest Beer Critic – Audrey Greetings Beer Drinkers, I come in peace. I am female, 20-something and prefer a $5 bottle of moscato to any beer in current existence. It’s a stereotype I shamefully fulfill. However, that doesn’t mean I can’t critique a bottle or two. I just took a nice swig of…wait, checking the bottle…Hopalicious IPA brought to you by Ale Asylum. It’s Eric’s. I asked him for a sip, and then he proceeded to tell me how I drank it wrong and made too much foam form in the bottle. Oops. Okay, so, my honest review? It’s bad. Not good. How can someone enjoy this? Like, if I put a few blades of grass, soda water and a piece of ham in a blender it would most likely produce the same taste. But, you know, beer makes Eric happy. Beer makes a lot of people happy. So who am I to judge? The point is, I can appreciate beer but not enjoy it. Here I am making an amateur beer critique a lesson on morals. Appreciate different tastes, styles and alcoholic beverage preferences. You don’t have to agree, but...

Week 5 – Lupulin Maximus

Week 5 – Lupulin Maximus by O’so Brewing Co.        I have been drinking this beer for a few weeks now and seriously can’t get enough of it. The brewery is located right in Steven’s Point, WI and does a hell of a job at brewing beer. I  would not be surprised if more beers from O’so make it to the Beer of the Week list.        In terms of the Lupulin Maximus, you won’t be surprised when I tell you that it’s an IPA. This beer has an ABV of 9.0 which isn’t unusual for an IPA. Although I love recommending beers to others, I would caution people from trying this beer unless they know they like the bitterness of...

Week 4 – The Commuter

The Commuter by One Barrel Brewing Co.      Are you looking for a break from the long list of popular IPAs that everyone is always suggesting to you? Well this beer just might be the answer. The Kölsch style was first brewed in Germany and has now been adopted by American brewers. Although there is still some hop to this beer, it goes down smooth and easy. You may get a good sense of how it is going to taste by how it looks – light body and a very pale gold. Side note, this may be one of the coolest labels and names for a beer… but that is just one man’s opinion.
