Back in June, Barb posted a video from the “I Love My Library” Contest, sponsored by Gale (link to original post), which featured a woman that resembled our very own Kelly dancing around the library. Sadly, that video didn’t win. The video below won the contest with their reworking of the Da Vinci Code. The Main Street Library and Dozier Middle School (Newport News, VA) took the grand prize with their video entitled “The Library Code” - check it out below.

When you think about food safety, what’s the first thing that comes to mind? Salmonella? E. coli? Three-second rule? With the recent outbreaks of food recalls, both for people and animals, it makes you wonder what’s going on. A new addition to our collection, Food Safety takes on the issues associated with the industry, including the history and background, the legislation and regulations currently in place, the health scares of the past and much more. It’s a great place to get a wealth of information on the topic and point to other resources as well. This book is part of the Contemporary World Issues series, which features other topics like gun control, genetic engineering and civil liberties in the US (available in the Main & Reference Collections). Just search for “contemporary world issues” in the catalog.

For those of you that are wondering, the answers to last week’s questions were:
The Library has 10 group study rooms. Which room has a view of Hyer Hall? Please specify the room number.
If you want to be technical, the correct answer is Room 3102N, but we also accepted if you put Room 3102 as well, as you can see Hyer from both rooms. There are plenty of areas where you can meet to work on group projects, located both on the second and third floors.
On which floor will you find big, comfy, beanbag-esque chairs?
The poof chairs, as the library staff affectionately refer to them, are located up on the third floor. At the library, you don’t just have to sit at a table to study or relax. Just watch out, those beanbag chairs might cause you to fall asleep (or off of them). There are also comfortable chairs downstairs near the Media Center.

Pulitzer Prize-winning journalist Anthony Shadid will be on campus to present the first of this year’s Contemporary Issues Lectures on September 24th.
You may want to read some of his work before the lecture, or possibly after the lecture you will be inspired to read more of his words. Here are a couple of suggestions:
While the UW-W Library does not have his books, you can read his articles for the Washington Post online. Go to the ProQuest Newspapers database and search for AU(shadid) AND PUB( washington post).
Furthermore, his books are available from other UW System libraries by using the Universal Borrowing service (it’s free, and the requested book arrives in 2-3 weekdays). Night draws near : Iraq’s people in the shadow of America’s war, for example, is available from nine other UW System libraries.

How many hours is the Library physically open each week?
The correct answer is 100.5 hours per week. We’re open at least eleven hours each day every day of the week, if not more, and until midnight on five of those days.
If you are having problems locating resources for your assignments, in what ways can you contact a librarian for assistance? List two of the four.
The correct answers were any two of the following: in-person, phone, chat, e-mail. Most people got this one right, which is good. We want to you be able to reach us when you need to, so that’s why there’s so many ways to contact us.
