Wellness & Travel

Hello, my name is Luke Piccione and I am this week’s guest blogger! If you want some more content on Wellness head on over to my blog: uww.blogs.edu/

Benefits of Travel

  • Taking time away from the job can have physical and psychological health benefits.  People who take vacations have lower stress, less risk of heart disease, a better outlook on life, and more motivation to achieve goals
  • Green urban areas facilitate physical activity and relaxation, and form a refuge from noise. Trees produce oxygen, and help filter out harmful air pollution, including airborne particulate matter. Green spaces also are important to mental health. Having access to green spaces can reduce health inequalities, improve well-being, and aid in treatment of mental illness.
  • Life expectancy is a good measure of health because it is reflective of an active population that makes healthy eating choices, has quality education, and access to affordable healthcare.
  • Clean air and water support healthy brain and body function, growth, and development. Water and air quality affect our bodies, drinking water, and crops and vegetation- all of which are major contributors to general health.

Spiritual Places to Visit

    • Traveling to new places has been a long form of spirituality as it’s a good way to refresh and renew our sense of wonder.
    • Traveling is intrinsically attached to our self-care and deeper connection to earth.
    • Spiritual places to visit
      • Camino de Santiago, Spain
        • A hiking trail that was originally used as a pilgrimage, reaching the city of Santiago where Saint James was rumored to be buried
        • In the middle ages, christians believed by completing the trial, they would be spared from entering purgatory after death.

  • Sedona, Arizona
    • Located about 100 miles south of the grand canyon, originally inhabited by Native American tribes.
    • It’s said to have a number of unmarked energy vortexes. Over the years, popularity has grown, becoming a mecca of wellness for crystals, aura-readings, card readings, spa’s, yoga, meditation, alternative medicine, mindfulness, and other similar remedies.

  • Sedona is one of my favorite places to go when I am down in AZ visiting my mom. It is so peaceful and has a lot to go and see. The first time going there, I remember hiking up vortex mountain and stacking stones, because it is said to give you good luck. I don’ t know about that, but it definitely was peaceful.

  • I’ve been wanting to get away from the busyness of modern life and take a good long break for awhile now. I actually have a friend who goes to college in Arizona so maybe this is a sign I should drive down and visit him sometime. It’d be a great way to explore the US at the same time.

  • I love how you included good spiritual places to visit! I also love how both places include hiking! Hiking and being outside are two things that really help me to relax and feel at peace!! I love that Spain is one of the places because I studied abroad there and love it so so much! If you ever have a chance you should go!

  • I was just telling my friends the other day I wanted to go to Arizona to feel the “dry heat”! I would love to travel to somewhere green and relaxing, Greece is on my bucket list, do you have any advice?

  • Yes, I agree with you. traveling is a relief from stress. because we can see that many health problems come from stress. I suggest that for a week you go to your favorite places where you feel happy.
