The Importance of Travel

We are connected more now than ever.

We can read about unfamiliar places and we can see videos about different cultures, but there is a problem with all this connectedness. Reading or seeing images about places you have never experienced yourself could potentially alter the difference between fact and fiction. Traveling to new places might be scary, uncomfortable or even exhilarating for some. These experiences will shape your understanding of the world around you.

This makes traveling is very important. You get to meet new people, eat new foods and even learn new things. I would encourage everyone to travel as much as possible to as many places as you can. You will always be able to replace the money you spend, but you can never replace the memories you make along the way.

From a young age, I have always taken family trips. Each year we would go to a place for a week. Sometimes it would be the Wisconsin Dells or it would be Gatlinburg, Tennessee. Other times it would be New Orleans, Louisiana or Las Vegas, Nevada.

But, once I was old enough to travel on my own (without my parents) I did. In 2016, I went to New York, New York, in February, then in March I went to Europe (France and England), then in April I went to Las Vegas with my father, then in the summer my parents, my best friend and I went to Branson, Missouri and finally I went back to New York in December to watch the Ball Drop into the new year .

That was a crazy year of travel for me.

I made some of the best memories with the people I love in the year 2016. Without traveling, I wouldn’t be able to say that I got locked in a bathroom in the streets of Paris or everyone thought my father was my husband in Las Vegas or that New York is really pricy no matter where you go to eat. The moral of the story is- go out an adventure, whether it is to the next town over or across the world… you will make some unforgettable memories along the way.

For someone who does not travel much and had never really traveled as a kid, I am interested to travel once I graduate in order to see the world. I have never planned a vacation before and I am interested to see how I can save money and also have an amazing time in a new place. I would love to see how to travel to Europe on $1000. Best of luck!

  • I lived in Ireland for about three months two years ago, and it was on of the best decisions I ever made! Traveling other countries and places opened my view of the world and made amazing memories! As great as it was, some of the best trips I’ve ever taken were state side. I can’t wait to see what places you recommend visiting. Saving some money will be great too!

  • I traveled a lot as a kid but one regret I have is that I was too young to remember a lot of it super clearly. I have places I wish to travel too but I honestly have no idea how to budget for a trip, I’m really looking forward to hearing how you got locked in a bathroom in Paris and if it’s as nice as people say it is.

  • I traveled a lot when I was younger with sports, but now I am excited to start traveling around the world. I already have a plan on going to Europe in May with school, and then taking a bit longer for travel on my own. I have always thought that traveling and experiencing different cultures brings people together.

    • I was the same way, a lot of away games around WI, but not much else. When I did Europe in the summer of ’15, it was the trip of a lifetime.

  • Traveling definitely is the best way to gain a better understanding of other cultures and to learn about the rest of the world. My family did not travel too much when I was younger but when I transferred to Whitewater I joined AMA and have gotten the chance to travel thanks to them. Last year I went to New Orleans for the first time for our National AMA conference and I will be there again in a few weeks, I can’t wait! I also got to go to Miami last semester and with the internship, I have now, I get to travel a lot for our events. I am lucky most of my travel is paid for but for fun trips I have downloaded apps like Hopper which helps keep travel cheap.

  • I agree with you. Travel, because money will return, but the memories you make on the way can never be replaced. Also, the older you get the harder it is to get around, for example in Greece. There was so much walking. My grandma keeps telling me travel now while you’re young and can get around. There are always good memories from family vacations and study abroad trips.

  • @meade I have gone on a couple different trips that have made me want to travel a lot as well. I studied abroad over the summer in Spain and it was an unforgettable experience! I can’t wait to follow along with this blog and to learn how I can travel more at a cheap price!

  • Thanks so much for sharing your story to start off this blog. This was a great way to create relatability and get connected with the blog. I look forward to getting reading more content with travel tips and stories about personal experiences. Growing up my family was able to go on many vacations, and I can truthfully say that traveling had an impact on my perspective on life.

  • I don’t know about New York. Never been there. But I’ve been to Paris. And pretty much everything to eat there is really pricey too!
