Ultimate Alliance 1/2

While they have been around for a while and the gameplay is a little outdated, I love these games and love even more playing them with friends.

Ultimate Alliance is one of my favorite games. The game is a top-down action-adventure game. There are 4 playable characters in a party, and the point of the game is to beat the evil villain. Each character has their own powers, and everything can be upgraded. The gameplay is a little hard to just jump into, but I would recommend playing through each game fully with someone/other people.

Ultimate Alliance 1 pits you against the evil villain Dr. Doom, and the adventure takes you across multiple worlds and universes.

Ultimate Alliance 2 pits you against a mysterious power that has been corrupting villains and heroes alike, and it is up to the Marvel heroes to save the day.

Both games feel old at this point, but they are both still pure fun and I love returning to them. The upgrading, various amount of players, and plenty of collectibles allow you to not only play through both games, but want to return to them to see what other characters can do and what combinations to put together.

The reason this is in this blog is because teamwork makes the game harder rather than easier, but I think this is a welcome challenge since the game feels very easy on Normal difficulty. Adding another player makes you more aware of everyone’s health and think about how you approach combat. I think the dynamic introduced some welcome challenge to an already fun game.

While these aren’t going to stun you with game play or graphics, these games are plenty of fun. While the bundle comes in pretty steep at full retail price ($59.99), I have gotten more than enough out of these two games to warrant the price point. Furthermore, this bundle goes on sale all the time at much lower prices. I would recommend waiting for a sale, but definitely don’t miss out on these games.

For now, that’s all! I may come back with a different topic or something, but as of now, this is the last scheduled posts for a while! I hope you were able to find something worth while in this blog!

Have a great day!

Magicka 2

This is my favorite cooperative game.

Welcome to the Weekly Co-Op!

This week’s second cooperative game will be Magicka 2!

Players: 1-4

Price :$14.99

Platform: PC, PS4

image from http://store.steampowered.com/app/238370/Magicka_2/

Magicka 2 is everything I love about gaming in an awesome little package. It requires good memorization, quick thinking, and fast fingers to be good a this game, but it is just as fun to go through with someone who has no idea what’s going on. This is just a fun game. Playing by yourself is fun if you know what you’re doing, but playing with friends is fun no matter the situation.

While I love this game, there is a lot to learn about the game. The story is your regular hero story: nobody can save the world from some bad guy and now you have to. The majority of learning you are going to be doing is based on the spells you use. You are a wizard, so you use spells. A lot. There is a melee, but it is pretty boring on its’ own. Spells make this game something like I have never experience before.

There are too many spells to count, and they all start from 8 types (2 spell-types assigned to each face button with a trigger to switch between the two) that can combine or cancel each other out. For example, rock spells will be cancelled if you try to put lightning in the spell.

To cast spells, the player has a 6 slot queue to put spells types into and cast something from it. For example, you could put 2 death spells, a rock spell, and 2 more death spells in your queue and area cast them to create a huge spiked wall around you. There are four different ways to cast as well: self, weapon, area, and beam. Each are activated different ways and all do different things with the same combinations.

The spells and casting them are complex, but can be as simple as you want. Don’t feel like learning the spell to cast a swarm of damaging birds around you? No Problem! Shooting fire at someone works just as well! This is how this game is able to attract any audience. There is so much experimentation you could do, but you could also just learn the basics and be completely fine.

*PSA: Make sure the people you are playing with know the revive spell and you can pretty much never die. It’s really easy to cast.

Also, friendly fire is permanently on.

There is so much more I could write about this game, but I think its’ best if you experience it for yourself. If you like getting to experiment in games and enjoy top-down brawlers, this is your game. I couldn’t recommend it more.

Surgeon Simulator

*Mild gore warning*

Ever want to feel like a professional surgeon? Well, this game doesn’t really do that, but it’s sort of close.

Welcome to the Weekly Co-Op!

This weeks’ cooperative game will be Surgeon Simulator!

Players: 1-2

Platform: PC, PS4

Price: $9.99

image from http://www.surgeonsim.com

Surgeon Simluator puts you in the hot seat of being a surgeon. I chose this game because it is kind of hard to play, but that is what makes the game so fun!

While this may seem gruesome, from the image above you can see that the art style makes the game a little more digestible.

I would recommend playing by yourself a little to get used to the game before bringing it to someone else. This way you can explain how thing work. For example, there are two syringes in each level. One syringe stops the bleeding and one hastens it. Knowing which syringe to use is vital to actually completing levels, and it would suck to not know that coming in.

As for the game itself, the controls are really wonky but in the best of ways. You control one hand and have to try to complete the surgery that way. the thumb and fingers are controlled separately, and the fingers can also be controlled separately. You have to find a way to get through the bone to take out whatever organ you have been assigned to take out.

As for a cooperative experience, this is where I have had the most fun. through a mix of anger, laughter, and strategy the game offers lots of different ways to attack a surgery with your partner. On top of that, playing with someone else either really helps you or really hurts you, and I love that dynamic.

I highly recommend for anyone that doesn’t get queasy from video game blood or organs.

Keep Talking and Nobody Explodes

Ever feel like the most fun thing to do would be to try and defuse a bomb with your friends? Look no further!

Welcome to the Weekly Co-Op!

This weeks cooperative game will be Keep Talking and Nobody Explodes!

Players: 2-???

Platform: PC, PS VR

Price: $14.99

A ticking time bomb filled with puzzles.

image from http://www.keeptalkinggame.com/

Keep Talking and Nobody Explodes is a cooperative game all about bomb defusal. The point of the game is to work with friends to defuse a bomb. The bomb is a box with an assortment of “modules” attached to it that each have a specific action that has to be done to it. For example, there are modules with a big button, there are wires that you have to cut in the right way, there are images that you have to choose in the right way, and plenty of other modules for the player to experiment and try out.

While this game does support VR, it does not necessarily require it. I personally would recommend using VR if that is available to you since it helps separate the player from the decoder.

Ah yes, the decoder. The reason this game requires at least 2 players is because the person trying to defuse the bomb has no idea how to actually defuse the bomb. The person who knows is the decoder. The decoder has either a bunch of sheets or a website that shows how to accurately defuse each bomb.

The interesting part of the game is the teamwork this game requires. It is literally required to have 2 people playing for this game to work, and exceptional communication skills to master.

If you have VR, I highly recommend getting this game. If you don’t, I highly recommend getting it! It’s a great game to play with friends!

Overcooked

Ever feel like making some absolutely wonderful cuisine but don’t have the skill to do so? Trying to cook with your friends but don’t know what to make or how to make it? Perfect! This is sort of the game for you!

Welcome to the Weekly Co-Op!

This week’s game will be Overcooked!

Players: 1-4

Platform: PC, PS4, Xbox One, Nintendo Switch

Price: $16.99 ($19.99 on the Nintendo Switch)

image from ghosttowngames.com/overcooked

Overcooked is a game all about… well… cooking. This week’s cooperative choice is all about making delicacies in the cooking world such as soup and burgers. Some of these zany choices may seem like simple dishes, but that’s where this game shines.

There are multiple game modes for this game, but the cooperative story mode is where this game really shines cooperatively. The story is all about cooking and saving the world. No greater cause in mankind could be found for the player to have a reason to cook with his/her friends.

The reason this game is such a good cooperative game is because of the way players are required to cook. There are several steps to completing a dish. First, get the ingredients to a chopping station. Then, get the chopped ingredients to a cooking station. Wait for the ingredients to finish cooking, and then serve it on a plate. This may sound simple, but this is met with multiple little intricacies throughout the process that make it harder such as splitting the jobs into two sides or putting a pit in the middle of the stage.

This game offers a lot of opportunity to love, or hate, your friends, and that is why it is on this list. It really tests the communication between you and your friends to be able to stay on top of the orders and figure out each map.

Overcooked is a great game and would highly recommend for anyone looking to play a mildly challenging cooperative game.

Lovers in a Dangerous Timespace

Venturing into deep space with some friends is a journey like no other that requires team-work and patience. This weird game does just that.

Welcome to the Weekly Co-Op!

This week’s game will be Lovers in a Dangerous Timespace!

Players: 1-4

Platform: Nintendo Switch, Xbox One, PS4, PC

Price: $14.99

Lovers in a Dangerous Timespace is a 4 player adventure into space. This game is not a usually cooperative experience. Teamwork is required for this game to be fun and function well, so I hope the team you choose to bring with you is going to be up for the challenge. There are multiple spots inside the space ship that players have to control, and that is what makes this game so interesting. Someone has to steer, someone has to control the shield, and someone has to control the weapons. The more people you play with, the easier this game gets. Fight off hordes of enemies as they try to ram, shoot, or blow up your ship!

As the game progresses, there are upgrades to the ship that can be found around the map of each level. The levels are different and provide different obstacles each time. These obstacles range from speed traps to slowing bubbles and on.

The point of the game is to find all of the other little buddies hanging out around the levels and defeat the bosses of each level. Once you are done on each level , you need to find the big heart to go into to finish the level.

It’s an interesting game, but does a really good job of making the players work together. Lovers in a Dangerous Timespace is a unique adventure that any team should try out.

Castle Crashers

Classic 2-D side scroller with modern and fun graphics, you say? Well, look no further!

Welcome to the Weekly Co-op!

This weeks cooperative game will be the classic Castle Crashers!

Players: 1-4

Platform : PC, Xbox 360, PS3, Xbox One

Castle Crashers

image from nonfictiongaming.com

Castle Crashers came out originally for the Xbox 360, and it is still one of my favorite co-op games. This game is a 2-D side scroller focused on hack n’ slashing your way through the game. It is a little gory, so beware of children. The gore and violence of the game adds to it’s satirical form, however. Instead of stabbing and enemy with a sword, why not cut off his head cleanly with a twig? How about beating down and enemy with a literal fish? Maybe that’s a little too goofy for some of you, so why not take the reigns with a golden sword or come out victorious with a huge wooden club? This game has so many options that you can play through at least twice before getting bored, and this is by no means a small game.

Finishing off around level 40, this game offers countless hours of fun for you and your friends. From getting to choose what kind of powers your knight will have to deciding what cute little animal is going to follow you around, the game does a good job of keeping everything similar while making each character feel unique.

The funny yet awesome story, the customization, and the simple to learn yet hard to master gameplay is what makes this game one of my top 10 favorite co-operative games to play with people. I highly recommend buying this game and going on a truly wondrous adventure with some friends.

Broforce

Welcome back to the Weekly Co-op!

Competitive local multiplayer not your thing? That’s okay! Every week there will be one game focusing on beating your friends, and one focusing on working with your friends!

This week’s Co-op game will be Broforce!

Player count: 1-4

Platform: PC, PS4

Price: $14.99

Image from broforcegame.com

Do you love classic action stars? Do you love awesome rock music? How about gratuitous gore? Well this is the game for you! Broforce is a crazy, fast-paced 2-D side scroller meant to test the bonds of anyone who plays it.

Broforce is all about killing stuff with cool action heroes to get to the end of the map. From parody characters of The Terminator to Indiana Jones, this game has all the different kinds of actions heroes you can think of. All of the characters have ‘bro’ somewhere in the name , and the game really tries to emphasize that. Shoot, explode, and slash your way through each level so you can progress all the way to hell where you and your bros get to kill the devil.

The reason this game tests the relationships of anyone who plays it is because this is not an easy game. Each player can only get hit once before they die, and you can only respawn if you freed other bros somewhere on the map. Otherwise, you have to go back to a checkpoint every time you die, and the checkpoints become less and less forgiving the farther into the game you go.

While it is a hard game, this game is loads of fun. Goofy deaths, lots of communication, and plenty of ‘MERICA to go around, this game is wild, and I love it.

That’s all for this week! I’ll be back soon with more recommendations! Have a great week!
