In September of 2015, the NHL announced that Adidas would be the official manufacturer of jersey’s and clothes at the start of the 2017-2018 season. Reebok, who is now owned by Adidas, was the previous manufacturer up until then. Adidas acquired Reebok for $3.8 billion in early 2006 and Adidas has put their mark on trying to be the best jerseys in professional sports.
Adidas Hockey has already done so much for the sport and the NHL with jersey’s, more awareness of Hockey, and being a pioneer for creating change in the world. They have used their platform tremendously to make a difference in the world. The 2019 All Star weekend was in San Jose and made the jersey’s entirely out of recycled material. They partnered with Parley Ocean Plastic to raise awareness of preserving our oceans and helping the environment.

Every team will wear a tag on the bottom of their jersey to represent this cause and raise awareness for it. From a marketing perspective, the NHL and it’s teams can follow through with this promotion and cause to help create more of an impact. The players and teams have a platform where they can reach more people to join their efforts. It also keeps their current employees happy about where they work knowing they make a difference.
This is a win for the NHL and Adidas as they are creating good press now ahead of a season that is about to be better than ever before with full stadiums, new T.V. deal with ESPN/ABC and Tuner Media, and a new expansion team in the Seattle Kraken.
