So we have talked a good deal about Commander and lots of ideas behind it. Lots of deck building and tips have been talked about. But one thing I have waited to touch on is called power level. To make things easier to understand ill be splitting this into 2 parts. The first will explain what power levels are and why this distinction is important. The second part will go into detail about which power levels represent what.

So to begin a power level is essentially the strength of a deck. This is a simple idea with many layers and each layer means something different. This idea is what most of the casual players like myself refer to as the line of what’s okay in your play group. My friend group tends to stay in the middle level with some lowend-high level decks.

Power levels tend to determine how powerful and in some cases how fun it is to play against. A power level is typically used for more competitive commander, its usually used to determine what matches are more balanced or which have a lower chance of victory etc.

A power level has several ways of determination as well. The first and easiest to understand is the commander, the leader of the decks, most have a category listed somewhere online that determines how powerful the commanders can be. This is usually a solid foundation but not nearly not enough information to determine the power levels.

The next major things are the cards of the deck, how powerful are these cards? Can they alone win the game without even needing the commander? Questions like these determine individual card power and then using averages we can determine the average level of the decks cards inside the deck but again this is still just barely not enough information to determine the power level.

The very very end of the commander power level determination is quite simply how fast and consistently can the deck win, and how fast the deck can win on average. Some dercks can win on turn 2 8/10 games, those are typically some of the most powerful and expensive decks in all of commander.

Ill go more into detail next week about the power levels individual groupings, this week was just a brief breakdown of what power levels are and why they mean something important for commander! I hope you will all tune in for next week if the power level intrigues you! Have a fantastic spring break and stay safe everyone!
