Growing up I was always taught to listen to the local news in my area. It was important to stay connected to what was going on around us. I remember turning the channel to FOX6 News every morning. It was to hear about the weather from meteorologist Rob Haswell and the general local news. My grandmother always told me to make sure that I knew what was going on in the world. Nowadays I tend to listen to the same local station but also CNN. Global issues are something that I’ve always had an interest in due to the many protests and movements surrounding them. If I don’t have time to listen to the news, the radio podcasts that I tune into on Spotify always help fill me in. In all honesty, it is very hard to not be aware of the news of the world. If podcasts don’t suffice, social media apps work in their place. On Snapchat there is a channel called StayTuned that discusses world-wide news. I found this interesting because it allowed me to feel included in the different dynamics of the world. I believe that Snapchat appeals to me the most because I am always on it. Either taking pictures or just being plain nosy. The news channel just tends to show up on my feed and allows me to tune in whenever I scroll. Google is another great source that connects me to global news surrounding the world. That search engine is, in my opinion, one of the best search engines in the world. On a day to day basis, I use Google to help me with my modern day tasks. It could be homework, cooking advice, or simply instructions. Google helps me with so many things. When it comes to the news, all of the apps on social media or news information is found in just a quick search. It’s like finding all your local or world wide information, with just a click of a button. It’s that easy! Social media and search engines help me stay involved. Word of the mouth is also another tool. Day to day gossip plays a hand in finding out new information for yourself. Sometimes I overhear conversation from my friends or peers. If it is something that peaks my interest, I’m googling it! In all reality google is my best friend besides social media. It helps me understand and connect with others.
When people hear about world issues, there are many different opinions that surround them. Many might think to themselves, “What does this have to do with me?” In reality all issues pertaining to any person that resembles yourself is your issue. So why not stay connected to what surrounds us?
