Disrupting the Cycle

Are we ever truly stuck?

Many people can agree that life might seem like a boring cycle at points. After all, you work through the week, get excited about the weekend, have freedom for a few days, and get back to the grind on Monday again. And so on, and so on. Is this how it always is until retirement? It seems like a lot of people get stuck in this cycle. It seems like it is going to take forever…

Is this cycle inevitable? A lot of people would argue that yes, it is more or less. A typical work week is Monday through Friday, so the work week blues and the weekend sunshine is all too real, it would seem. Or is it?

Let me ask you a question. What is it that you really want? And what are you willing to do to get it?

It’s easy to get stuck in a cycle that is familiar. Especially if you’ve established yourself within it, and you become proficient in the actions of completing the said cycle. For example, if you are used to going in to work early Monday morning and late Monday evening, this is what a typical work day will feel like to you. If you are used to anticipating the clock to strike 5 on Friday as to “free” you for the weekend, this will become a routine feeling each week. Repetition of these actions establishes a cycle over time.

There’s nothing wrong with being in this cycle, especially if you are content. However, many people are the opposite- in a similar cycle, but completely unhappy.

The thing is, you are not bound by any one cycle. You have the ability to disrupt it at any time. Nothing is “stopping” you from doing so. Sure, in some cases there will be consequences- for example, if you chose to leave your job, you won’t have any money. However, it’s the factor of not having money that motivates you to make the choice of staying at your job.

In this case, literally leaving is not necessarily the solution to escaping the cycle… it’s just one option, of many. You always have the ultimate choice. For example, you might consider other options such as switching jobs to one that suits your needs better, or asking for a raise.

And just like that, by taking action to change your outcome, the cycle has been disrupted… things are different, and for the better.

Again, let me ask: What is it that you really want? And what are you willing to do to get it?

The cycle cannot answer these questions, nor can anyone else- only you can. But if you are able to address these questions and understand the answers, then you have the ability to change the cycle. It’s important to understand yourself… Your choices are powerful.
