Transmedia COMM 440

We are in an age where transmedia is shaping a lot of how we do things creatively. The amount of ways to tell stories, share our creations, and make an impact on the world is astronomical considering that by all cases, this technology that we have is new. To think that computers aren’t all that old, and became powerhouse devices in the mid 90s is astonishing, and has lead the way in many innovative ways to tell stories.

Henry Jenkins in the attached video “Henry Jenkins on transmedia” states that technology has brought us an infinite number of things to do, weather that be consume media on multiple mediums such as Facebook, Youtube, and other platforms, to being an active participant of these mediums with our own work. Anyone can make an impact, from someone board in their house, to the board room of a big corporation, anyone can make an impact in their own way. One of the first “big impact” moments of transmedia is young musicians in their room, strumming on a guitar, singing, or what have you, to all of a sudden being signed to massive record deals overnight. Or two guys who want to make funny comedic skits, to owning a full production studio for higher quality productions. Its the combination of all of these mediums that create virality. One example is the Obama Campaign. Obama utilized the relative new medium of social media platforms to help make his campaign in circulation.

The interview is more or less the same concept, but the TEDx video I embedded resonated with me, and made me think about how media is consumed. The speaker states that we are in the post digital era of transmedia. “Want to make your own drama show? HBO owns that shit!” was a quote that made me think about how companies have taken that formula, and ran it through their filter over and over again. Our limits is our imagination, money, and just doing it. The speaker states that multiplatform is not optional anymore, and audiences want something more engaging, more authentic. Participation is key, the audience wants more interactivity, they want a deeper experience. That I think is the biggest take away from the ted talk. While Henry Jenkins talks a lot about the fundamentals, I think knowing how to master those fundamentals can lead to new ways of creating an impact in today’s world of mass media. Maybe through that we can make the changes we want to make.
