{"id":87,"date":"2020-06-25T19:52:01","date_gmt":"2020-06-25T19:52:01","guid":{"rendered":"\/?page_id=87"},"modified":"2021-04-10T18:58:37","modified_gmt":"2021-04-10T18:58:37","slug":"engage-equip-and-empower-process","status":"publish","type":"page","link":"https:\/\/blogs.uww.edu\/yesproject\/how-does-yes-work\/whats-next-at-dhs\/engage-equip-and-empower-process\/","title":{"rendered":"Engage, Equip, and Empower"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Engage, Equip, and Empower Young People to Become their Best Selves<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>The transition from childhood into adulthood is challenging even to typically developing young people.&nbsp; For those who have had complicated histories, who have not developed trusting relationships and confidence in their skills for navigating this process, it is even more difficult.&nbsp; For them, the task is to reach toward their future while filling their maturational gaps and addressing their age-appropriate developmental tasks.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The YES! model is structured to build upon activities that are both<em> effective<\/em> <em>and appealing to young people.<\/em>&nbsp; The developmental tasks of 16-26 year-olds are focused on discovery and seeking self-knowledge. Consequently, emphasis on developing and supporting \u201cyouth voice\u201d and \u201cyouth driven goals\u201d are keys to engaging young people in services.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Research shows that the executive skills needed to manage the tasks of young adulthood emerge only in the context of safe relationships and nurturance. These are the two elements that must be addressed in relationships between young people and providers.&nbsp; The YES! Model includes a process that utilizes activities drawn from the \u201cDirect Services Core Competencies\u201d identified at the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.pathwaysrtc.pdx.edu\/pdf\/projPTTC-Compiled-Core-Competencies.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Pathways Research and Training Center<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>Provide safe relationships in which young people can tackle life challenges,<\/li><li>Overtly support young people as they identify their priorities and work toward potential solutions,<\/li><li>Enhance the skills of young people to address their immediate challenges and move toward a future that will be satisfying to them, and<\/li><li>Balance the pursuit of forward momentum toward goals with the flexibility to accommodate the loss of motivation that intermittently distracts young people from their long term goals and is sometimes perceived as \u201cnot being ready for treatment.\u201d<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>This process has three components \u201cEngaging, Equipping and Empowering young people\u201d and is frequently referred to simply as \u201cthe three Es.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large is-style-default\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.uww.edu\/documents\/orsp\/Youth%20Empowered%20Solutions\/3es-graphic-PDF.pdf\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1024\" height=\"695\" src=\"https:\/\/blogs.uww.edu\/yesproject\/files\/2021\/04\/3Es-Web-diagram5-copy-1024x695.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-1044\" srcset=\"https:\/\/blogs.uww.edu\/yesproject\/files\/2021\/04\/3Es-Web-diagram5-copy-1024x695.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/blogs.uww.edu\/yesproject\/files\/2021\/04\/3Es-Web-diagram5-copy-300x204.jpg 300w, https:\/\/blogs.uww.edu\/yesproject\/files\/2021\/04\/3Es-Web-diagram5-copy-768x521.jpg 768w, https:\/\/blogs.uww.edu\/yesproject\/files\/2021\/04\/3Es-Web-diagram5-copy-1536x1043.jpg 1536w, https:\/\/blogs.uww.edu\/yesproject\/files\/2021\/04\/3Es-Web-diagram5-copy-2048x1390.jpg 2048w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px\" \/><\/a><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>The surface simplicity of this process provides transparency regarding the roles of both young people and providers using this process. This is especially important since young people are generally skeptical that mental health services can benefit them. This focus is especially strong as young people enter the treatment process and continues as needed. YES! strives to work transparently.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>Youth voice is paramount\u2014young people identify life challenges that they want to work on.<\/li><li>One or two staff usually assume the role of coaches or partners and provide most of the engagement. As other providers and peer supports become involved they also focus on engagement.<\/li><li>The process of addressing challenges is built on a respectful process of identifying barriers, planning how to address them, a teaming approach, and ongoing discussions and debriefing that assists the young person in figuring out how to proceed.<\/li><li>Throughout the process, staff roles include focusing on developmental relationships and maintaining a focus on identifying goals and approaches that are \u201cdoable, \u201d identifying good decisions and existing strengths, and offering support where needed, etc.<\/li><li>As young people attempt to achieve difficult goals, they need a combination of encouragement to \u201cstick with\u201d the challenge and support to think flexibly about how to achieve the goals. Reminders of progress already attained are important.
