Wolfmother would politely disagree. The Australian rock band recently released their fourth album, Victorious. Those familiar with the band will recall their classic sound that harkens back to the hard psychedelic rock and early metal of the 1970’s. While Victoriouscontinues this similar vain, Wolfmother is not just rehashing worn out vinyl. Their powerful sound combines an in-your-face production style complete with heavy riffing guitars, bombastic drums and the soaring, Led Zeppelin style vocals courtesy of singer and guitarist Andrew Stockdale. This album is a perfect continuation of that. The band does an excellent job of taking the raw energy and soul that is a draw to classic music and so often lacking in mainstream music and channels it into a powerful blast exiting your speakers. The opening track “The Love that You Give” starts with an explosive guitar riff that continues throughout the song complete with a catchy melodic vocal that will have you banging your head down while driving down the highway. The title track “Victorious” continues down the path of melodic hooks complete with fuzzed out riffs that immediately bring your mind to early metal bands like Black Sabbath but with a flair all their own. The band also shows its mellower side with the poppy acoustic diddy entitled “Pretty Peggy” complete with sing along chorus and whistle melody. Overall Victorious is a great continuation of the style that Wolfmother has been working towards since their debut album in 2005 and its just as intense now as it was then, with this album Wolfmother seems to be a firm believer in the notion, “If it ain’t broke, don’t fix it.” -Michael

Some might say mainstream rock and roll is dead.
